Following on from a piece about the ludicrous ticket prices to stand in the middle of Hyde Park to see The Rolling Stones 44 years after they were any good (and even then they were rubbish in Hyde Park!), I've just discovered that Mark Lewisohn's long awaited book will come out in two editions, unlike 99% of Beatles' records which, of course, were open to all.
According to Amazon, a £30 version with 800 pages will be released on 10th October, but on 14th November that will be made obsolete when a £120 edition comes out with 1856 pages (ain't 2013 great!).
I was going to buy the book on the first day of issue, but now I neither want to buy the inferior version, nor do I want to fork out £120 for the version that everyone should get anyway!
Call me naive (again), but The Beatles should be 'for all'. Fitting that the news should come this week of all weeks given what's happening on Wednesday.
Sorry, Mark and his publishers, but this will definitely be a library job for me.

I'd heard that the extended version of the book would be digital only!
So, is this £120 book part one and two combined or will there be another £120 book coming out at a later date? If I'm shelling out that sort of money it would have to be signed by a Beatle!!!

Yep, there will be three, this is just the first volume. On Amazon both the £30 and £120 options are described as 'Hardcover' editions.
I know that this is common practice in 2013 (remember the Dylan extra CD that effectively cost £80 and, wait for it, they were recordings from 1989-2006!!!!) but can you imagine it happening in 1964? Epstein/EMI/The Beatles clearly could have done it.
'You can either get 'Can't Buy Me Love'/'You Can't Do That' for 7/6 - Or you can get 'Can't Buy Me Love'/'You Can't Do That' and 'One After 909' for four times 7/6.'

The artwork for the book can be seen at www.thebeatlesbiography.com. Is it just me, or is it appalling? This is the spiel: You have the most photogenic pop group in history (possible exceptions Love, The Doors, The Stones). From the greatest era in popular music (no exceptions). And so you get in a graphic design company who use a typeface on the cover that has no feel for the group or era, and would look more suitable on a year-ending financial report for a bank!

You are right, that cover is a complete mess but I'm guessing Apple wouldn't let them use the classic Beatles with the drop "T" though because it's an official logo now. Not too keen on the title either: "All These Years: Tune In"? What relevance does that have to the Beatles?

That really is a crap cover. Nothing remotely Beatle related other than word 'Beatles'. At least his other books had photos on the cover.

Yep, the 'T' might have been a problem, but you'd think that 'everyone was a winner' with Lewisohn's track record. Given that this volume is about the pre-60s, and that some new photographs have presumably been unearthed, one new picture of the Quarrymen and/or the Beatles with a 1950s font would surely have worked better.
And, yes, the title 'All These Years', I don't get that either (is it from a lyric?).
How about 'The Beatles: Volume 1'; does what it says on the tin.....just like the double album, 'The Beatles'!

are we sure that is the genuine cover? - that there's not a different real cover being kept hidden until nearer the release date (or is that wishful thinking?)

I know George released the single 'All Those Years Ago' but that's about it.

I found out from another site why it's called 'All These Years'.....it's from Sgt. Pepper's, 'the act you've known ALL THESE YEARS, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.' It was obvious when I heard it but, as another Beatle fan said, if it's so oblique that it stumps a whole load of Beatles fans, it probably isn't a very good title!

Just been checking out the various prices and formats - here's some info from Amazon about "The Beatles - All These Years: Volume One: Tune In":
The Hardcover Edition (1248 pages) £22.07 The Kindle Edition (800 pages) £15.99 (This is a right bargain but depends if it's an abridged version of the Hardcover Edition) Extended Special Edition (1856 pages) £120!!!!!! (Would they really charge an additional £100 for an extra 600 pages?)

That's about $35 US for the hardcover. I think that's reasonable for what other books are selling for nowadays. And I never judge a book by its cover (I'm sure you guys have heard that before.) Mark's books so far are some of the best written and researched Beatle books out there, so I'm expecting this one will be too. I know I'll be waiting and will purchase a copy.

Just heard Mark Lewisohn being interviewed on Beatles Brunch. Brilliant interview with Geoff Lloyd. I am holding out for the special edition. The books sound amazing. According to Lewisohn he's interviewed new people that haven't been interviewed. All the Beatle books do tend to have the same people interviewed. That's if anyone's interviewed for some books as authors tend to just re-hash previously written books that are themselves re-hashes plundering the likes of the Hunter Davies book and Alan Williams The Man Who Gave The Beatles Away. I think it's going to change quite dramatically what we know or what we think we know about The Beatles. .......well possibly!

Yeah I have to agree MrMustard it was a brilliant show, and it makes sense when you think about it, interview people who haven't been interviewed before, and to illustrate his point of how the stories and facts in most Beatle books are derived from the same source, Mark Lewisohn used the analogy of the same pupils in class putting their hands up to be heard while other equally knowledgeable pupils are happy to sit quietly, content in their wisdom (like George!).
