Still on the album that invented Rock ponder
The Velvet Underground & Nico (1967 )
Released on 12th March . 1967 So this pre dates Are You Experienced by 2 Months ! But did it invent Rock ?
So I listened . I`ve heard this album for over 40 years now and it`s never been in my top 100 , so I guess it`s going to be a tough call on my humble opinion on the Invented Rock Album . But my honest is all that matters
Sunday Morning . It`s alright is`nt it
I`m Waiting For The Man . Yes , you see I have a bit of a problem with this one . It`s a repetitive riff with Lou waiting for his man. And in case you did`nt know or care it`s his drug dealer . Now I have no problem with Drug dealing songs , but for some reason this seems to be bees knees as it doe`nt really say what it`s ... About ? So it`s a cool song . You know the berry wearing type and only like photo`s in black and white and smoke cigarettes like it was invented last week . To me it`s just a repetitive riff of Lou waiting for his man , it`s nothing special , probably took him ten minutes to write .
Femme Fatale If you know , which maybe you do , you know I have a bit of a thing for female singers . Nico ? Not really and it`s makes you wonder why she was & Nico on the credits . Was it because they wer`nt to sure if she was any good and thought best not to say she was a band member Or . She was so good that she deserved her own credit on the album . It`s for you to decide . On this she sounds like a stoned Marlene Dietrich
Venus In Furs . The reason why I bought the album if my mind serves me well . A top track and maybe my fav of theirs depending if I`m intoxicated or not .
Run Run Run . This one is really one that is a skip , and is it just me put has Lou been smacked in the mouth on his way to the recording studio as he sure sounds like he has a fat lip . The guitar break in the middle reminds me of a band I was in and it was our first rehearsal .
All Tomorrows Parties . Ah yes . It`s Nico and she sounds like she learnt this about half n hour before recording it . Good though !
Heroin . Yeh, it`s OK . Got to say it`s a brave song for the time it came out and it`s for me a Iggy Pop template
And we have 3 more but I think we don`t need to worry about them .
So did it invent the Rock album ?
I say no . It did invent that Arty farty N.Y. weird counter culture and artists came out of the wood work and sold paintings of really bad art and sold them for a shed load of money and we had Andy Warhol . I`m not a fan of this album as you may have spotted . Is it better the Experience ? Hell no . There is a reason why Jimi Hendrix is still the man . Do you agree ? , disagree ? All about opinions I guess . Stand Out Track Venus In Furs

Yeah. Tough call. It only sold 500 copies initially but the story goes that everybody who bought one formed a group. Or were inspired to up their game. David Bowie being one. But it's not a great and catchy album. There's just daring depth to the lyrics that were a bit dirtier than had come before. Heroin is pretty blatant. S&M wasn't a topic for songs then. It just had more influence than great ground breaking art. It sort of inspired others to produce the ground breaking art. This album was the catalyst I suppose. But lots of kids (in their 20s) find it kind of hip. But it depends on what you're looking for. The artists were looking for a spark or idea. You are looking for the finished art piece; eg, The Man Who Sold The World or Hunky Dory.
It's reputation far outweighs it's catchiness.

Good Observations Amadeus . And here we go again with another contender .. The Doors - The Doors (1967) Released Jan. 4th 1967. That is a release date ! So is this the album that invented the Rock album ? I have to say ..Yes ! Break On Through , Soul Kitchen , Crystal Ship , The End , Back Door Man , Light My Fire .. To name a few . The End . A truly brilliant track and as always been a fav of mine Jim at his finest and it`s one of those songs that stands out on it`s own merit Not many songs that sound as atmospheric as this ditty . I`m sure if you are reading this you have heard it .? If you hav`nt , where hell have you been ? I guess if your going to talk best debut albums of all time , this is a top 5 . A masterpiece . I like The Doors , just don`t like the albums much . But this one and the bloody masterpiece L.A. Woman are the only Door`s studio albums I rate . The rest are a bit hit and miss for me . As good as Experience album ? I say not , but the release date can not be denied as this must be the Album that invented the Rock album . Agree ? Stand Out Track . The End. 61.

Yes reader ! I`m still on the who invented the Rock Album search . Can anyone beat the The Doors ? Well here we have The Yardbirds with For Your Love . 1965 ! Not even their first outing , but that was a live album and we don`t do live , do we folks ( Well I did one ) For Your Love - The Yardbirds (1965) Ok then . What is Blues and what is Rock ? I don`t know either , I`m just a window maker . But I will just go with my instincts and see what happens . I`d just like to show the Personal , as I think it is really important . These fellows would be very influential in the next few years for what become the invention of Rock ( I don`t know what that means either) Keith Relf – lead vocals, harmonica, acoustic guitar Eric Clapton – lead guitar on all tracks, Jeff Beck – lead guitar Chris Dreja – rhythm guitar, lead guitar Paul Samwell-Smith – bass guitar, backing vocals Jim McCarty – drums, backing vocals Opening title track is a tune For Your Love written our very Mancunian Graham Goldmam I once was in a lift with him . Then we have your under three minutes standard boy meet girl blues (?) songs I Ain`t Doing Wrong is a crackin Rockin tune and I guess, Beck would take this track onboard and onto his brilliant Truth album . Another classic on this is the Good morning Little School Girl with Eric Clappers on lead . I guess this is another marker for a lot bands of the Blues persuasion that would come into the later years of the 60`s The Stones were doing there thing and as much as I love the Stones , I never thought of them as trend setters in there early years . I guess I`m a purist Blues fan . So is this album the invention of the Rock album ? Not for me . Very basic blues tinged songs and I bet if you start looking you will find even earlier albums of this ilk . Stand Out Track For Your Love . 60

Eh Up !
Boston - Boston (1976 )
I bought this album a few years ago and never got past the first track . More Than A Feeling . A classic Rock track that sounds as good as today as it did then . I think in my humble that this album invented 80`s AOR It has a few strong songs of Rock & Roll Band , Peace Of Mind and the very appealing Foreplay/ Long Time
It sounds a bit too much stuff going on as for the rest of the album . We get the high backing voices , the (sounds like ) 6 guitars and keyboards coming out of the boards . There is just too much going on to concentrate on anything ! I have heard worse . So I think now I`ve finally got past More Than A Feeling , I may give it another go . But my oh my it sounds so 80`s Rock and were not even got the Disco hell to come through the decade of this album yet . Stand Out Track . More Than A Feeling

Kindred Spirits - Larkin Poe (2020) ( Spotify )
I`ve been slowly dragged into the world of the Poe`s They seemed to be on You Tube every week doing there own take on rock classics . Some worked , some were alright and since the lockdown , they really have been busy ladies And they recorded a new album and it`s ..Covers.. mostly .
A very basic set up of acoustic and slide guitar and a really hypnotic voice of Rebecca Think a stripped down Allman brothers and that southern style blues .
First track is a little snippet of a song and then into the classic (?) Lenny Kravitz Fly Away . No a lover of the song , but it seems they do a good job . Rockin` In The Free World . Yep that one . Heard this before as they realesed a few tunes before the album came out ( which was this Friday ) Again with an Acoustic and slide and a slow tempo . I don`t think is going to be a fav of mine , but Rebecca`s vocals are good as usual (Your`re The ) Devil In Disguise I knew the song , but I don`t know who`s song it was . The man himself Elvis did it ( Not Costello, and not written by the King ) It was O.K. In The Air Tonight Yep, the man himself wrote this one . Which I just realized that the tour of the return of Genesis (the second coming ?) was cancelled due to the Pandemic , which makes me think maybe there is a God . Anyway , it`s O.K. Nights In White Satin . I classic indeed . They really do a good job on this one and so far I bet this will be the best on the album . Who Do You You Bo Diddly ? Yeh , this is what they should stick with , some ol` blues classics A good little tune . Take Want You Want Post Malone tune (no , I don`t know who they/he/she are ) Good track again , great slide solo on this one Ramblin Man Again the ladies should stick with great songs like this , they work ! Bell Bottom Blues And again , the covers they should stick with , they really come over better when doing blues tunes in my humble This is a great track Crocodile Rock . It`s O.K.
Overall it`s a nice easy Sunday afternoon album and as they always say . It`s what`s on the tin No big production just the two sisters doing what they do best . I hope to go and see these ladies next year on there U.K. Tour , as I have said , they have me hooked .

The Bear`s Revenge - The Moulettes (2012 )
Ok , I`m going to copy and paste the genres of this band . Art Rock, Chamber Rock, Progressive folk, progressive rock, folk rock, psychedelic folk, experimental rock, avant-garde. Something for everyone I guess . But is this album any good . You can guess that you can not review an album like this on a first listen . But I shall do my best . There a English band and they sound very much like This Is The Kit They have that Gentle Giant with even touches of Fairport and even Bjork mode ! The album is a long one and you feel the vibes as it goes on . I kinda liked it patches and I can see myself investigating on the rest of there albums . I may have found my new fav band . Watch this space .

Neil Young - Homegrown 2020
It`s new but it`s old as Neil may have once said . Recorded unreleased songs after the bloody brilliant On The Beach . If your thinking of buying this and you dont have On The Beach , then buy On The Beach . It has a few good little songs on it The Star Of Bethlehem which has been released somewhere on one of Neil`s thousand albums he`s released in over 50 years . So I can`t really think it`s worth forking out a tenner for it . Buy On The Beach instead . Have I mentioned how good On The Beach is ? Stand Out Track . White Line

And as you may have spotted that is almost the end of another year and that means Best Album of the Year lists . I bought this months Uncut because it had that bloke who use to be in The Beatles in it . And of course I turned to what was No 1 album of the year , which I already knew as I have it Wondering if there would be a interview with Laura and what she thought of having the best album of the year and the like and then I found the No 1 . .. It was Bob Dylan .. . So the next album I have to review is Rough And Rowdy Ways , Uncuts album of the year .. Wish me luck ..

Snubbed Dylan ?! That`s the kinda thing he would do back in his prime ..
Anyway ! This is what happened . I put Bob`s new one on and I was just reaching for the valium after the forth track and my phone rang. I thanked the God Apollo and turned Bob off . I shall return to it later than sooner . The phone call ? It was my son Paul . Yes , folks my son`s called ..Paul , named after that bloke out of The Beatles . Did you know he has a new album out ? He has y`know ! So I thought . I`ll give it a review . Now this may be a shock to you , but I don`t think I`d liked a McCartney album since Flowers In The Dirt . In fact , I really have stayed clear of everything he doe`s since...After Off The Ground . I did buy Flaming Pie and the other one with the upside down writing on it ... I forget the name , yes , it was that one with him in his back garden back in the day .. I did listen to Egypt Station and I was a bit shocked as it was`nt that bad . There is a review on here somewhere . So folks I`m not a fan of Paul`s new stuff , in fact not even his live stuff . It`s his voice y`know , it`s shot to pieces in my humble But here we go ...And remember I`ll be honest and this will be my very first listen , which is`nt going to bode well with me I can imagine , but I may be wrong ?
McCartney III - Paul McCartney (2020) Spotify .
Long Tailed Winter Bird . An Instrumental ! With a bit of Macca ... Vocals It was alright .
Find My Way Bit strange , but it sounded like an Eels song Very much like an Eels track ! It was alright .
Pretty Boys. I don`t know what to make of this one , but if I listen to this album again , I think I`d skip this one . Not keen
Women And Wives I have this thing that when I hear a song I like my foot starts to involuntary tap away Nothing happened on this . bit of a relief when it finished . Nah .
Lavatory Lil This would have fitted nicely on Neil Young`s Shocking Pinks album ( that`s not a compliment btw.) Nope
Deep Deep Feeling . I took a few deep deep breathes while listing to this ( not a compliment btw ) Terrible and it was a long track, and to think I thought this man walked on water back in the day .
Slidin` I`m now coming to the conclusion this album is not for me . It`s a rocking track with Paul`s vocal`s ruining it
The Kiss Of Venus Terrible .
Seize The Day No comment
Deep Down. I know Paul`s not a drummer , but he really should give Ringo a call . Really awful song I really need a valium now
Winter Bird / When Winter Comes Not bad actually and his voice is`nt bad at all . Like this one .
Overall . I don`t think I`ll be buying 10 different colours or how ever many ones they are . It`s really sad that Macca has to do stuff like that just to squeeze extra money out of his loyal fans . Remember when the Fabs would record a B side so the fans did`nt get cheated with a album track . I also think that the pre order thing is a bit naughty . I`d be a bit naffed if I`d pre ordered this album before I heard it . But I`m a wise ol` Owl and I did`nt think for one minute that this album would be something I`d be playing a lot or at all . This is my own opinion and I have to be honest , yes , I throw in a bit of humor in , as after all I`m no expert and hearing an album once is not really a fair way to review an album . So then. I`d love to hear your thoughts on the album and if you would like to give me some stick about my review . I can take it ! I know we should be very grateful that Paul is still recording . And there are many fans I guess will love this album Uncut gave it 4 thumbs up Is that out of 10 ? I hope so .
55.
2 weeks off work now , so I`m going to go through lots of albums and try and finish this experiment before the new year ! Wish me luck , I`ll need it when I review Bob`s "Album of the year "

Got another one in .
Strange Lights Over Garth Mountain - Gwenifer Raymond (2020) Spotufy
This is an acoustic folk instrumental album . I love nothing more than an folk acoustic songs . But a whole album is instrumental and it is good it just needs a bit of variation The whole album is just an acoustic . No overdubs , no other instrumental to be heard . This is from a young lady who`s been playing her wares live and apparently very good ! So I think I`ll be keeping an eye out when the world is back to normal I will be going back to this album for sure and I`ll be seeking out her other album from 2018 . Stand Out Track . Hell For Certain .

I do like Bob's CD. it came out in June so it's six months old already! The Grammy's said BoB didn't submit his CD for any catagory award in time. Why should he care? He just made $600 million selling his songbook! BoB can you lend me a dime? Haven't heard McCartney's yet, probably after the holidays.

Rough And Rowdy Ways - Bob Dylan (2020) Spotify
Album of the year ? Let`s find out . Not liked a Bob Dylan album since 1975 , so I guess I`m not a big Bob fan. Bob found Jesus , I found other bands to listen to .
I Contain Multitudes . It`s a chilled song with Bob with his talkin voice . Not a bad little ditty
False Prophet I like this one , very good , Bob`s singing on this one and it`s not painful
My Own Version Of You . Very much in the vain of Blood On The Tracks feel to it with a very bluesy late night in New Orleans bar . It`s alright but I can imagine a younger Dylan really making this a great Dylan classic .
I`ve Made Up My Mind To Give Myself To You. Not keen on this one . Very Leonard Cohen
Black Rider. Nope . And I`m sure Bob put in a rude reference to a male member if you get my drift
Goodbye Jimmy Reed. A upbeat song ! Very 50`s Rockabilly song And even an Harmonica pops up in the one . It`s O.K.
Mother Of Muses. This is a bad one . I`ve heard better drunks sing better than Bob on this one . Terrible.
Crossing The Rubicorn. My nerves are starting to shred a bit now as this is a bloddy long album ! A slow blues song and it`s slow indeed . Incredible how I did`nt reach for the skip button on these last two tracks and there`s 2 tracks to go and the last one is 17 minutes if I remember rightly .
Key West ( Philosopher Pirate ) Again a slow song . The songs seem to be melting into one by now and I`m losing all my concentration . Not a song that will be on my play list .
Murder Most Foul . I`ve sat through this one before as this was the "single" from the forth coming "album of the year " Yep 17 minutes . Bob talkin about a short history of The U.S.A and Pop culture I think only Bob could write a song like this and make it Iconic This would be a fitting song to be Bob`s last recorded song . With 600 million in the bank I`m sure his house is paid for . Walk away while your on top . But he`s the last of a dying breed . The Stones keep touring , Macca is touring and recording more than he`s ever done and Bob ? Throw in the towel , or it could be murder most foul . Stand Out Track . False Prophet

Power Up - AC/DC (2020) Spotify
Who doesn`t love AC/DC ?! I`m gutted I did`nt get to see the band with Bon Scott, but they still blew my mind when I saw them live , twice !
Critics and people who don`t like bands that pump out the same album for 40 years may scoff when they heard the band were back. So after losing a member of the band not so long ago and their singer has lost his earing and quit the band , only to be replaced on their final of all final tour by that wonderful talented Axel Rose (?) You would think after all that ( Axel Rose would be a nail in any bands coffin I`m sure ) they would hang up the flat caps , school uniforms and call it a day . But no Rock n Roll aint noise pollution it`s a way of life . So is this album any different from the albums of the last 40 years ? No way ! It`s full on AC/DC just how we love em` ! Not their best and not their worst , but it`s a great album from a band on the brink and it`s a worthy of a listen to a band that has stuck with the same formula for their entire career If it works why change it Stand Out Track Witch`s Spell/ Systems Down .

Seed Of Memory - Terry Reid (1976) Spotify
Terry Reid . What could and should of been . This man may have ended up as the lead singer of the greatest rock band ever , and I`m not talkin about Kiss But he was on tour with The Stones and had to turn down the New Yardbirds . This is a wonderful album and if you like your Crosby Still and Nash , you`ll love this album .(Nash is on backing vocals) To Be Treated Rite would be a perfect C.S.N. song . I loved this album . He has an incredible voice and he wrote all the songs on the album Already heard the title track over the years and this is a cracking late night album . This is on my to get list . Love it ! Well folks , I`m down to the last 50 ! That means I`ve now done 315 albums ! And I don`t know what I`ve done and what I havn`t , but hey I`m sure I hav`nt done this debut from Steeleye Span .
Hark ! The Village Wait (1970) Spotify
Love Trad folk stuff and this album is caked in it . Ashley Hutchings was the Bass player of Fairport Convention and he steered them to Trad folk as they just seemed to just cover Bob and Joni . So he was the reason for the incredible Liege & Lief and it was so good he left after it and formed Steeleye Span . What should he do with his new project then ? Do a whole album of Trad songs of course and then do a couple more albums and leave . But in the mean time the early Steeleye Span Albums are just full to the brim of Old English folk songs With the wonderful vocals of Maddy Prior who I`m sure she is one of the most underrated English female vocals and Tim Hart carry this album . Very standard songs with the The Blackleg Miner is pure Fairport and the best track on the album for me is Lowlands Of Holland . Overall a good album , but they would just get better and over shadow Fairport who seem to lose their most talented musicians going off to other bands and solo careers .

Yep , do love the Terry Reed album A nice shift of direction from the usual weird stuff that I listen too . That nicely brings me to my next album .
Myopia - Agnes Obel (2020) Spotify
A Danish 40 year old singer / songwriter it says here . Folk / Classical ? I have flirted with a few of her songs , so into the fray . Very advent garde kinda back ground music you get in those vegetarian coffee shops . I think it`s an album you have to be in the right frame of mind to listen to and I think I`m not in that frame . Very minimal vocals and I guess minimal music . I wont be abandoning her just yet.

Hello reader . Well.. Unless I can do 48 albums in the next 9 hours it`s looking I`ll have to change the title again . But never mind it`s an Annus horribillis year ,so I can be let off for my poor showing . And the way it`s going in the U.K. I will have lots of spare time to motor on with this little thread . You may have also spotted there has been lots of new albums done on here . But today I`m going with an album that has one of my all time fav Rock songs on it . We`ve lost to great musicians this year that have been around for most of my musical education , Neil Peart and Leslie West Mountain was West`s baby and if you love Cream and you never heard them , they are for you !
It`s been so long since I`ve played this album, so here I go .
Mountain - Nantucket Sleighride (1971)
It`s very much of a hard rock album that was around when Sabbath were killing it . So this band may have been overlooked ( I don`t know if that`s so I was only 9 when this came out ) 50 years old next month ! Incredible it would be only 7 years old when I had it ! The title song sold the album for me . Only bought one more Mountain album and that was Best Of ( Yes , I know !) But Nantucket Sleighride is an incredible song and it`s beautifully set up with Taunta (Sammy`s Tune ) which is a short little instrumental that`s always felt apart of Nantucket . Written by the Bass player Pappalardi who of course produced Cream. The rest of the tracks are all basic under 4 minute rock songs . Maybe not there best album , I seem to think Climbing is a wee bit better overall . But when you listen to Nantucket Sleighride it`s well worth the entrance fee . So long Leslie West .
