Did anyone watch this on BBC4 last night? I didn't think I'd seen it before but then started recognising bits and pieces and suddenly remembered sitting in front of the TV with my little tape recorder and the microphone up against the TV speaker trying to keep my family quiet as I recorded it onto a cassette... which, incredibly, I still have to this day!!

I have it to watch on my Sky planner. I'm going to see the new Rockshow at the cinema on Sunday. Then the blu ray release is just in time for Father's Day!

Just watching this now. I've seen this before years ago. In fact I had it on a very dodgy video. Don't know what happened to it - ex-wife probably took it along with those lovely earthenware cooking pots that also went missing!
I don't remember it being called Wings Over The World though. I'm sure it was called McCartney.

Here's a bad copy, but will give you an idea for all those that can't afford the 'real' thing.

Yep , that was it Rocky . I , like yourself Musty missed the Wings Over The World . Im going to watch on the I Player as soon as . I noticed that in some shots ( esp. Soily ) Macca had a "M" necklace and a Speed Of Sound necklace as well . but in the next shot just a M necklace . So then it must had been shot more than one night . I have never really bothered going that road with the film . But as far as I remembered from when I saw it in the early 80`s it was just the same .

Well I saw the new Rockshow at the cinema today. I have to say it was awesome!
In my opinion, Jimmy McCulloch is by far and away the best guitarist wings (or solo McCartney) ever had. He was 23 when he toured with Wings in '76. He died at the age of 26. Such a waste of talent. His feel and taste puts him up there with guitar legends. Hopefully the release of this concert film will get him some recognition he really deserves today.
Joe English was a pretty incredible drummer too.
Can't wait for the blu ray to come out.

Here's a little trivia for you mrmustard and gang. Jimmy holds the record, and I think he still does, for being the youngest performer on a #1 song in the UK! He was just 16 when Thunderclap Newman recorded this song in 1969:

What about St Winifred's School Choir, Grandma We Love You, There's No One quite like Grandad and the likes. The kids that sang on Another Brick In The Wall. Do they not count Rocky?

I guess not. I just copied what I read on Jimmy's Wiki bio. I checked again with Record and Trivia in the UK and it seems they list Jimmy Osmond when he was with the Osmond Bros. at 9 yrs.8 months old and had a #1 hit and no mention of McCulloch at all! Maybe it's what chart they are going by?

Perhaps they mean youngest instrumentalist? I don't recall St Winifred's Choir and Jimmy Osmond tuning up their Strats before their performances! LOL

Apologies are totally unnecessary Rocky. It all makes for good discussion in the end!

Watched the Wings documentary on bbc4 & really enjoyed it. But I do have this love hate thing with Wings. When I was growing up in the 70,s Wings were always deemed to be uncool. I don't think Macca has ever been "cool" in the way John & George were. A rock n roll band with you Mrs in ,miming keyboard parts was never going to gain any credibility. The Wings output would sway from the sublime to the ridiculous. I agree with mrmustard regarding the prowess of McCulloch. Fabulous young guitarist who gave Wings a bit of Balls. Rockshow demonstrated how good a live act they were. Although the horn section made them sound a bit Caberet for my taste. Wings will never go down as one of the great bands of 70,s. Frequent line up changes didn't help the cause either. Flashes of Macca,s genius always kept the interest up. I just think Wings were a little lightweight. Great value live ,but patchy albums.

I think Wings uncool ness stems from McCartney's insistence in diversity in styles. By that I mean he would insist on doing what Lennon would term as granny music rather than just sticking to rock. I think this was an unfair depiction back then but it's stuck. After all, this is what McCartney is about. Putting Linda in the band cemented this but, in fairness to her, she is playing playing all those keyboard parts live in front of thousands. Her backing vocals were very distinctive in the Wings harmonies and was an integral part. Rockshow was clearly a peak for Wings as was that line up. However they didn't capitalise on it. They stopped touring after that tour (or rather McCartney did) when they should have carried on touring. Their next project, London Town, was difficult. McCulloch and English both left and they were back to a 3-piece. Yes, patchy is a good description of Wings and indeed McCartneys solo output. But there were peaks and Rockshow was one of them.

Ok Linda may have played those parts ,but were they audible. Did she do any solo,s? As for her " distinctive " vocals your being to kind mrmustard. Come on they were shocking . I remember hearing her isolated backing vocals , when they were captured somewhere & radio 1 played it. Truly awful. But she was lovely Linda who made great sausages. Linda was a great wife to Paul & a wonderful mother.

Very audible. For example the keyboard solos in Band On The Run and Venus and Mars. Ok they aren't going to win prizes or worry Rick Wakeman but they still have to be nailed and heard live in front on thousands. That takes balls.
We've all seen they episode of The Word were they isolated Linda's vocal but it was a harmony part and referenced to nothing. With Paul and Denny's harmony part it works well. Take Steve Howe, dreadful singer but his harmony part works great with Squires and Andersons.
Linda's never going to win any prizes for singing or playing but she did contribute to the overall sound of Wings in a good way. I agree her presence added to the uncoolness of the band in an era of rock.

As I may have mentioned I was a Wings fan in the 70`s (Helen Wheeels was the first record I bought with my own money !) and in the fun club . At a young age it was`nt really the point of if Wings were cool or not for me . How brilliant is Band On the Run album. One of the best selling albums of that time , so they must have some credability .
As for rock tunes they had a few I still think are great songs Hi Hi Hi , Juniors Farm , Soily , Live And Let Die , The Mess (love this song ) and the first side of Wild Life is underrated . As with Linda I just accepted her as a band member . Who can listen to Yoko`s singing . Just watch The Dirty Macs on the R.n.R. Circus without squirming .
Respect To linda . She did get Macca back on his feet after the Beatles break up . One thing though she should`nt have done was Cook Of The House . Over to you Al on that one .
