I read Smash Hits for years. Loved Mark Ellen as a pop journalist and he and David Hepworth were the backbone of the best years of the magazine. Neil Tennant of the Pet Shop Boys started his career writing for it and I recall him being the first writer to interview Madonna in the UK. Also recall the lovely send off he got when he left as the PSB were taking off.
Smash Hits was unusual. It never had a snobby attitude music, it would talk about all aspects. Mark Ellen did a piece on the Incredible String Band, who were a sitar folk prog act in the late 1960's in a pop mag who was interviewing Duran Duran and Wham.
Great writing, great photographs and the background to my teen years.

Brew I do not know if you ever read Smash Hits but that was the level of pop writing I was into a 12.

I read another chunk today, and found myself nodding my head with his observations. Pothos, I never read "Smash Hits." At school our favourite was " Merseybeat"

I read Smash Hits for well over a decade. I also read the NME, Melody Maker. Sounds, and record Mirror.

I owned all the copies except the 1978-79 copies that look amazing. Still got my Smash Hit Pen somewhere.
