I looked up info on the Weston Rail Bass. As I had assumed from the photo, you could move the pickup closer to the neck for a darker tone, or closer to the bridge for a brighter tone.
But I've never been a fan of Steinberger-style headstocks.

I'm also not a fan of the "headless" design. Sliding pickups are an interesting idea. Here's Guy Pratt showing his custom bass...

Some guitars that are built for commercial use pothos get a little note in the mail to Cease and Desist! Like the rare guitar Rick is holding here. Only one of these was ever made. btw I've read Rick has a spectacular guitar collection. At one time he owned Lucy the guitar Clapton gave to George. Rick is the man that had it painted red!!!

Speaking of "Cease and Desist," my brother owns a Yamaha "lawsuit" bass, so called because it resembles the Rickenbacker bass, either the 4001 or the 4003.

" henryj ----Speaking of "Cease and Desist," my brother owns a Yamaha "lawsuit" bass, so called because it resembles the Rickenbacker bass, either the 4001 or the 4003. Those guitars were built in Japan in the 70's & early 80's. What Fender did was instead of trying to sue the Japanese companies they joined them and in 1982 the Fender/Squire guitars were born.

With the advent of punk and heavy metal music you had a lot of kids trying to modify and personalize their guitars so they would be one of a kind. Here's a replica I built of Eddie van Halen's 'Frankenstrat'.

The issue of copying guitar designs seems to have changed over the years. Back in 1963 Gibson announced their Firebird, a somewhat radical design for the times. However, the offset waist was a feature that Fender had sought to copyright on their earlier Jazzmaster, and so Gibson re-designed the 'Bird. Fast forward to today, when cheap and flagrant Chinese copies are flooding the market. A bass copy even carries the Rickenbacker name on the headstock. Of course, the market is driven by demand, and some people want an instrument that looks like a Fender, Gibson, or, Rickenbacker, without paying the full price. There are copies which are pretty good, and many which are dire.

I know, my friends have bought some of those Chinese copies and just replaced the electronics with better ones. saving them a bundle of cash.

Pro model Gretsch guitars use toggle switches for tone, in place of the rotary knobs that most other electric guitars use. The stereo version of the Gretsch White Falcon can occasionally be seen with four toggle switches--two tone switches and two pickup selector switches. One set of switches is, from what I understand, and the other is for mono. That is, a selector toggle and a tone toggle for stereo, and a selector toggle and a tone toggle for mono. Here is Neil Young with such a Gretsch: www.iconicguitar.com/2013/04/neil-young-gretsch-white-falcon.html

There is a picture of the White Falcon in the book, a truly beautiful instrument.

I have always liked the Gibson SG design. This custom is especially nice... Sister Rosetta Tharpe at Granada TV

My brother used to have as SG, except his had just two humbuckers.
Great sounding guitar. My brother said it was headstock heavy and that the neck kept wanting to go down.

George had a pretty neat SG and gave it to Peter Ham of Badfinger. After Peter died the guitar was forgotten about until his brother found it in his closet and put it up for auction. I found this old lawsuit one on eBay and restored it. This is how it looks today. in very nice playable condition.

Here's another guitar of George's that I made a replica of. His famous 'Lucy' Les Paul that Clapton gave him in 1968. Gibson was selling Limited Edition replica's of this guitar for $17,000 ! I found this leftie Japanese lawsuit guitar. Here's the finished guitar. Gibson didn't make any lefties. I may have the only one.

Rocky, that's brilliant; your guitar collection must be outstanding. I have the Epiphone version of the SG, still a very nice piece of work.

Where do you display your guitars Rocky. I have a music room ( some call a man cave) and have them displayed on the walls and on guitar stands. I can just spin on my chair here while on the computer and look at each one if I want to check out something on them that I've found on the internet. The Beatles guitars, which I have six now, I have up in my bedroom on the walls.

So, Rocky, which 6 Beatles guitars do you now have?
My brother has owned every guitar the Beatles ever played, with the exception of the Rickenbacker 420 or 425 that George played in 1963.
He's had the Gretsch Duo-Jet, Country Gentleman, Tennessean, Ric 360/12c63, Epiphone Casino, Gibson J-160e, SG, Les Paul, Hofner Viol Bass, Ric 4001 Bass, and Ric 325.
He also has a Gibson ES-335, but not the 345 the George had in late '65.
Gearhead here.
