Does any one think that Liverpool has gone overboard with Beatles statues and public art displays? At Last count, there were 18 statues to one or all four of the Beatles. Another statue of the Fabs is planned for the Albert Docks.

Not only did they put Liverpool on the Map, but they started the British Invasion. I think it’s overdue!

Does that count the ones in Cavern walks that look nothing like them!
Liverpool city council ignored The Beatles for years. In my opinion, it's fitting to have statues and other tributes.

Liverpool was already on the map. A major port and many wonderful people come from this city, not just The Beatles.
I think there are far too many things here now for the band. Lets see more to remember the others from the Merseybeat.
The airport named after John was an awful decision in my book.
Mind you, I still live in hope that George might get a bus stop or a bin named after him.

Did I tell you that I tried to get the council to give a bench and a small plot of garden to George's memory and they refused?
They said it would cost too much money to set up. I had explained that as George loved gardening then maybe a small plot, somewhere like St Johns gardens, with a bench where people could sit and remember him. But No..Too much.. or maybe George is not important enough to the city leaders?
So I have now decided that St George's Hall is named after him.

I like your 2nd opinion better.

There are too many bud. I was trying to get a bench and a small bit of land. Not a statue or a bar named after him.

In the period I'm talking about, from the rise of the Beatles to about 1980, the city was in a slump. The docks were dying, strikes frequent, and the economy stagnant. A friend of mine came here from New Zealand in 1972, and thought the war was still going on; there were so many bomb sites! At one time Liverpool was the second city of the Empire, but it was in a slump. At one time the East Lancs road was nothing but major factories. They have all gone, and now we rely to a large extent on the entertainment/tourism industy.... and guess what?.... people flock here to see Beatles related places and memorabilia. The port is starting to thrive again, especially with the new Cruise Liner terminal. Where do those tourists head when ashore? Straight to Mathew Street. Regarding the naming of the airport, well many airports are named after prominent people, such as war heroes like Butch O'Hare [Chicago]. film stars like John Wayne [Orange County], Presidents like Reagen/Kennedy [NY and DC] and political non-entities in RSA. A couple of years back a poll was conducted as to who was the most famous Scouser. John Lennon topped it, so the naming of the airport seems appropriate. Ken Dodd was runner up and he has a statue in Lime Street station. OSR I commend your efforts to persuade the council do do more. They are so bound by interia. The famed Eleanor Rigby statue and bench, which attracts throngs of tourists, was created and donated by Tommy Steel. For me the most inspirational Liverpool character was WW-1 hero Noel Chavasse [double VC winner], and it took over 90 years to get a memorial for him.

I agree bud. The place was a dump. But we were on the map. Nobody denies the tourist flock here because of The Beatles.
Noel was a good one
My own favourite is Kitty Wilkinson who did so much to help the poor.
Kitty Airport would sound mad.

What gets me about the Liverpool City Council rejecting a simple proposal is how much money the city takes in from Beatles tourism. Of the £3 billion in tourist revenue that the city takes in, Beatles tourism accounts for £400 million. They can't finance a park bench? The city says 50 million tourists visit the city each year; about 2 million of them come because of the Beatles.

Liverpool city council didn't want to know about The Beatles in the late 60s, 70s and early 80's. Whatever they do now in terms of The Beatles is purely for financial gain and exploitation. The vast majority of the Liverpool people didn't seem to have any interest in The Beatles and actually seemed embarrassed by them. What didn't help was that the bands that came out of the late 70s and 80s in Liverpool rejected The Beatles and Merseybeat rather than embracing it.
The statues for The Beatles are well overdue and are a well deserved acknowledgment albeit for exploitation and financial gain on the part of Liverpool City council.
What I find even more narrow minded is the lack of acknowledgement of Brian Epstein. The city owes it to him. Of course there is no financial gain for the council in doing this.

The airport named after John was an awful decision in my book. I would really like to know why you think it was an awful decision Swanny ? Funny thing for me with being an outsider looking in about Liverpool is that I loved it in the late 70`s early 80`s The reason I got on a train at the age of 16 in 1978 to go to Liverpool was of course to see where The Beatles came from and when I got there I got to Mathew St and saw the Lady Madonna I was in awe I know there was nothing else but with the exception of the small statue and no Cavern the Street probably was the same as the day The Beatles use to play . Now it`s a very large Beatle themed place for tourists. I loved Liverpool in those days as it really had character I have been coming to the place almost every year ever since . The 80`s were very hard times for Northern working class people but they got through it . True Northern spirit .

Naming it after one Beatle. if anything name it after the band. Then again I would prefer it not named after anyone. I always say Liverpool Airport.
The port named after Paul. Lime street station after George, The Tunnel after Ringo...where would it all stop.

I suppose it is strange that it`s just named after one Beatle but the way that John`s life was taken in such a way that with the Airport named after him his name will live on forever in his hometown . I don`t think the other three would have objected .
You can imagine the thrill of people coming from all parts of the World to Liverpool to visit The Beatles hometown landing at John Lennon airport . I think it`s great to think that there is an Airport named after a man who gave us wonderful music No one can deny that can they ?

It's an airport. Maybe its because I live here but I just don't get it. If I flew into Elvis airport I would not get excited.
Mind you, its a good job they never named it after The Hurricanes...Hurricane Airport would freak everyone out.
By the way I like the area around Matthew street, that is a good Beatles area.

Fully agree Mr Kite although I think Macca is a bit miffed on the quiet!! He probably thinks it should be called the McCartney-Lennon airport!
