I’ll make this brief.
This album is a soundtrack to an animated feature. The original vinyl release had 6 Beatle songs on side one and seven instrumentals on side two. Two of the Beatle songs on side one were re-issues, so there are only four new Beatle songs on the album.
Yellow Submarine was a contractual obligation album, so naturally John and Paul let George have two of the songs. In my opinion the only decent song was John’s “Hey Bulldog.” Paul’s “All Together Now” is little more than filler, although the part John sings (and may have written) is borderline engaging. George’s “It’s All Too Much” is okay, but his “Only a Northern Song” is a little unconventional for my tastes. Further, the lyrics are about the unconventionality of George’s recent songs.
I will say that they could have put these songs on the White Album in place of “Wild Honey Pie,” “Why Don’t We Do It in the Road,” and a couple more. Or at least replaced “Revolution 9” with these four songs and been done with it. In fact, “Hey Bulldog” would have fit right in with “Martha My Dear,” “Blackbird,” “Piggies,” and “Rocky Raccoon.” Not to mention “Everybody’s Got Something to Hide Except for Me and My Monkey.” (For those who don’t know, Martha was Paul’s old English sheepdog.)
I haven’t listened to the side two of this album in well over 40 years, so I am not qualified to review that part of the album.

Nice.
But I like Wild Honey Pie and Revolution 9. Not to mention ..Northern Song and It's All Too Much.
Side 2 is just, whatever, film music. The only piece with a hummable melody is the last one.

It really should have been an EP as originally planned. It would have been considered better than what the LP was!

The EP idea came after the album was already released or scheduled for release. Then they just forgot about it.

The EP idea came after the album was already released or scheduled for release. Then they just forgot about it. Too bad they didn't follow through. If you look at the Beatlemania years, they released a $hit load of EP's that were songs already released on LPs or Singles.
