I've read that Stu wasn't that bad of a bass player as some have made him out to be, especially in those Beatle historical movies. Another made up 'fact' from Allan Williams that has gone down in annals of Beatle history. Williams is responsible for a lot of 'Beatle facts' that we have all grown up with. The vast majority being total nonsense.

Question: I just finished Mark Lewisohn's book a second time; Did the cavern smell as described? It probably did. I've been in a alot of small clubs where the toilets were near the stage and the smell just lingers out. Nowadays they have those little round blue discs to prevent that. lol Plus in the summer when it was hot out peoples sweat just added to that fine aroma.

Yes, the book got it spot on. The smell was a mixture of Onions [from the Hot Dogs], Jeyes Fluid [from the toilets] and sweat The walls actually dripped with sweat as the session went on. You could smell the Cavern on your clothes for hours after.

Mennon came out with a deodorant that tried to catch that rare fragrance called 'Teen Spirit'. lol

I'm surprised cigarette smoke was not described as part of the smell. Most of the world in the past smelled like cigarette smoke. The present smells so much better.

Possibly because, as you note, everything smelled of cigarettes, so we didn't notice it. As a lifelong non-smoker it's much better now.

Do any images of that gig exist. This might be one. Can't tell if that's Pete or Ringo. Ringo was with them for only two months when they played with Little Richard on the bill. But I can't see that large a crowd showing up at a concert that Pete was the drummer if it's an earlier pic at The Tower. But I also can't see any rings either, might just be the angle. Here's a picture when they met him and their hair length and style looks about the same as the picture above.

That photo with Little Richard was in the Cavern, and on my first visit, not knowing who Richard was, I wondered why The Beatles were with a boxer! Duh!
