For those of you who do not know, Del Shannon had recorded some great psych tunes in 67. He even recorded with the Stones producer, but the album (Home & Away) remained unreleased until recent years. He did however release the Stones cover, "Under My Thumb", which is really good! However, Del did end up releasing a fantastic Psych album called The Further Adventures of Charles Westover. What does the title mean? Well, Del Shannon is not really Del Shannon. Its one of those made up Rock Star names like Ringo Starr. His real name is Charles Westover. Thus the Further Adventures part. This album is so good its amazing! With some hints of Beatles Pepper, but not really, it has a great Psych feel and amazing Del Shannon vocals. This one is a must for your collection. You HAVE to like this album. There are certain albums a real music collector must own. I have included a link to download the album, but as a special add on, I have upped the bonus tracks version. Enjoy! rapidshare.com/files/130210285/The_Further_Adventures_of_Charles_Westover__Bonus_Tracks_.zip.html

Oh man!! I cannot wait to read what you think! I am a big Del Shannon fan and think he was vastly underrated. Report back on your reactions to your first listen!

Hi Void -
I am a big fan too! I did some reading about him, I was blown away. Did you know he was the first person to chart in the US with a Lennon-McCartney tune (From Me to You)! He met them touring in 1963 in England, was very impressed and came back straight away to record and hit the charts.
I'm in a weekend band, and we play Runaway. I do the keyboards, I wish I had Max Crook's Musitron! It was actually reading to find out about that sound that got me interested in Dell Shannon. I think Max Crook should be in the RxR Hall of Fame, as sort of an early Bob Moog. He used toaster springs for his instrument, for goodness sake!
My computer is a little dodgy, so I can't upload, but I will keep an eye out for this album. It's a real shame how Del Shannon came to an end. I just love reading about that road trip from Michigan to NYC in the dead of winter to record "Runaway" - broken down car, they could see the road through the rusted floorboards ... incredble! It sort of reminds me of the trip the soon-to-be Fab Four made down to London to record "Love Me Do".
Thanks for posting!

Does he do that Paul harmony on the 2nd break? In some weird way, I think it was that key change that set the Beatles on the path to greatness in terms of song writing, brilliant

Found it! Del Shannon's From Me To You Very nice! I notice he didn't do the harmony on the 2nd middle eight ... at first I thought "Must be too high for him", then I remembered ... we're talking about the guy who hits a high A on "Runaway"! Must be that he just didn't want to sing it for some reason. Kind of funny hearing someone besides the Beatles doing their trademark "Whooo!" Nice cut ... to think it's the first time a Lennon-McCartney tune charted here in the States! Thanks, TheEnd!

Just listened to it - not at all what I was expecting but in a good way! It's very good actually - quite a few stand-out tracks for me, in particular "Thinkin' It Over", "Silver Birch" and "Colour Flashing Hair". Now, don't take this in a bad way - I mean this as a very positive comment - the album reminds me very much of a cross between The Monkees (particularly their "Headquarters" and "Head" period) and very early Bee Gees (their first two Sixties releases). I'd certainly recommend lovers of "The Further Adventures of Charles Westover" to also check out those albums. Again, thank you VERY much for upping this for us The Void.
