I just had a chance to listen to a new release: Stax (as in Stax Records) does The Beatles. Most of them are not so great, but Booker T & the MGs do various covers which are interesting. The best is Otis Redding doing Day Tripper. That is really a must hear. Not as great as Wilson Pickett & Duane Allman on Hey Jude, but certainly Otis really does the song his own way. If you get a chance, give it a listen.

Very interesting - thanks for the info Did you know that in 1970 Booker T and the MGs released an instrumental version of The Beatles' Abbey Road LP - it was called McLemore Avenue, which was the address of the Stax studio in Memphis (926 East McLemore Avenue). Very interesting thread. Stax released a box set recently from their "first" 40 or 50 years, some great tunes on there.
As I recall, John liked Booker T and the MGs a lot. He referenced them, on an album cover if I recall, as "Booker Table and the Maitre D's".
Pure John!
