If you forget that it's Billy Joel (I know that'll be difficult!) but just listen to the track with an open mind, this is really a song, both lyrically and musically that The Beatles could have recorded. Maybe?

Oh, I've always heard the Beatle influence on Billy Joel...for a long time now. Maybe it's those precise background vocal smears that hear on both Billy Joel and Beatles records. I've always thought "Movin' Out" was particularly Beatlesque Billy Joel. This particular song, "Laura," was from Joel's Nylon Curtain album, which many people considered to be somewhat Lennonesque. Joel had divorced his first wife shortly before The Nylon Curtain was made, so there may have been a Plastic Ono Band (the album) influence on the songs. Before The Nylon Curtain, Joel's stuff was more like McCartney than Lennon.
I'm surprised no one had already started a thread citing the Beatles' influence on Billy Joel, and I nearly started one myself last week.

I had no idea he was that influenced - this is indeed a very Lennon/Beatles style track - I get a very "I'm So Tired" vibe from this one in places - compare living alone isn't all it's cracked up to be section to give you everything I've got for peace of mind!
I like this - any more examples?

From the same album Al (The Nylon Curtain). This is 'Surprises'
There's definitely more than a hint of Lennon's phrasing, especially when he sings in a higher key. Also, some lyrics could be right out of the Lennon songbook. See what you think. It's actually a fine album and in fact some critics have interpreted the album to be, in part, a homage to the music of The Beatles and John Lennon.

I agree with HenryJ, the Beatles/ McCartney influence is evident on a lot of Billy Joel material. 'Don't ask me why'/ 'Movin Out'/'My Life' always put me in mind of McCartney... 'Laura' is a beautiful song too...

I really loved watching Joel jam with McCartney and others at the event of Sir Paul's 1999 Hall of Fame Induction.I too have always detected serious Beatle influence on the ultra-famous Long Island musician. The two performing alongside one another seemed an apt fit to say the least....

This is a quote from Billy Joel, talking about his album 'The Nylon Curtain' (taken from the book 'Ticket to Ride' published by Macdonald)
Q. Billy, you've stated in interviews that 'The Nylon Curtain' was sort of a tribute to the Beatles, could you explain?
A. I probably said that after the fact. I think it was more a catharsis for me after the tragedy of John Lennon's murder. There's a lot of 'Lennon-esque' vocalizing going on. There's a number of tracks where I didn't realize I was doing it, but I was almost singing exactly like John Lennon. I was phrasing like him. I was very traumatized by his death. And I think subconciously it was a tribute to John Lennon that the arrangement and production were couched in a 'Beatle-esque' form. I wasn't aware I was doing it at the time. I came in and Phil (producer Phil Ramone) would say, 'You know you sang that exactly like John Lennon. Is that what you want to do?' I said, 'That's the way I felt'. I went out and did it again, but I didn't feel right, except for the way I'd done it originally.
So there you go...
