Hi Apple ! And firstly, your correct. It's very rare when you come across a Lennon-Harrison track. The song was they're first single ever released! It got released along with Tony Sheridan 'My Bonnie' somewhere about Late Summer/Early Fall 1961 by Polydor records. It was the legendary bands debut single! In October 1961, a man named Raymond Jones ordered 'My Bonnie'/'Cry For A Shadow' at the NEMS Store in Liverpool. He shortly told and inspired Brian Epstein to track down the Beatles. Real conversation between Jones & Epstein: Brian: "Who are they?" Ray: "They are the most fantastic group you'll ever hear!"Ray was right, Epstein (as many of you already know) became to be the Beatles manager up until 1967 when he died.

(was Raymond Jones real? - did he really order the record? - did Alister Taylor invent a name/falsify an order? the argument rumbles on....)

Everything is true!!!
Mr. Taylor says he's Raymond Jones and Raymond Jones says he's Raymond Jones and Biff Debris also has a stake in the Raymond Jones dilemma. It was really a CIA plot to undermine the communist stronghold over eastern Europe and the lack of 'O'Henry' sales in the former Soviet Bloc. And for "Cold Turkey" slipping down the charts. And The 'Biafra' Thing.

I remember George saying it was a dig at Hank Melvin and the way the Shadows performed on stage, you have to see a Shadows performance to see what I'm talking about. The Beatles wanted to do the exact oppisite and started jumping around and having fun on stage. Hence the title 'Cry for A Shadow' meaning cry laughing at them.

Raymond Jones definitely existed. See a previous post of mine.......
Find below Spencer Leigh's reply to my question regarding Raymond Jones. He has kindly given me permission to post it on this forum. This should surely put the question beyond doubt now!
Spencer Leigh - All the quotes are from my interviews, not from anywhere else, and I have them all on tape, and that is the end of that matter. Raymond Jones had a printing company in Burscough, now run by his children, and he retired to Spain. I am certain he exists. At diffferent times, Alistair Taylor and Sam Leach claimed to be "Raymond Jones" and as Bob Wooler said to me, "This is getting like I am Spartacus." Yes, Brian probably knew the name but when a good looking boy in a black leather jacket came into NEMS asking for the single, I am sure that prompted his interest! Thanks for listening and reading! Spencer

Wasn't 'Cry For A Shadow' the B side of Why? While the B side of 'My Bonnie' was 'The Saints (come marching in)'? I always thought that Brian first heard/read about the song (My Bonnie) in the July 20th 1961 copy of Mersey Beat and that's what prompted him to order the record for his store. I never heard of this 'Raymond Jones' story until now. lol

we have gigged this a few times and its a great instrumental to listen to live, the only problem is when you keep getting band members leaving ! and then you cant play these tunes until they are re - learned and that takes time!!!!
Frustrating,,,,,,,

I did a little checking on 'Cry For A Shadow' and George composed most of the song with John's approval. It was originally titled "Beatle Bop' and was a parody of the Shadow's song "Frightened City' which George had done as a spoof to fool Rory Storm. It was the first Beatles composition to appear on record on Tony Sheridan's German lp 'My Bonnie' in June 1962.
