Perhaps it was understandable that such an absurd conspiracy theory gained credibility in 1968-69 when it first came out. People tended to believe media much more in those days and the whole conspiracy theory bandwagon hadn't really got started. I actually find it a really interesting subject. I don't believe it AT ALL though. Paul McCartney is 100% alive! But I do enjoy looking at how skillfully placed and clever some of the clues are. I also watched "The Last Testament Of George Harrison" and laughed. Just the fact of how fake some of the clues on it was hysterical.
