Ok Musty . I have to hold my hands up and say that I have never listened to Marillion . But but did go round to a mates house back in the day and I did not like them . Which didnt help much as to me they sounded like Genesis to me which then and now I do not like . So I will get up Spotify and force myself to listen to them . Marillion not the Bald one`s band . And stop saying I`m harsh ! I`m very lovable when you get past my opinionated side ! I shall leave you with a album I do like The brilliant Ommadawn .

Question? That was 1970. There where loads of prog rock singles before then. King Crimson had released In The Court Of The Crimson King and Cat Food in 1969. The latter they performed on Top Of The Pops.
The greatest prog rock band in my view in the true sense of the term are The Beatles. If Strawberry Fields, Penny Lane, I am The Walrus aren't prog then I don't know what is. That's 1967 but arguably Eleanor Rigby could be termed prog and that was a year earlier still. You are well too late with Question? Mr Kite!

He seems ok . It just seems to me he is trying to imitate Jon . Which he has to really as they are Jons songs But as Ive said many many times No Jon . Not Yes . Interesting Mr Musty that you class Strawberry Fields as Prog Rock or even The Beatles as a Prog band . I think of the Beatles 67 onwards as more Psychedelic . I would say that A Day In A Life as a Prog song but it was nt a single . I do think that Pepper is prog in it`s own little way But thats music for ya ! I didnt know that The Court Of A Crimson King was a single ! I`m lookin at chart stuff here Mr Musty . What are your thoughts on this little ditty Prog Or Pop ? Still not been able to listen to Marillion yet .

Every song I mentioned was a chart song.
In the true sense of the term The Beatles easily qualify as Progressive rock i.e. music that breaks boundaries and creates new forms in terms of complexity of composition and performance. If the change from Love Me Do to Tomorrow Never Knows isn't progressive then I don't know what is!
For a true informed opinion on Progressive Rock, I urge anyone to read Professor Bill Martin's book LISTENING TO THE FUTURE: THE TIME OF PROGRESSIVE ROCK.
I really like 10cc. Brilliantly written songs but this is pop and not prog in my opinion.

I`m jealous ! Musty . I found this on a Prog Rock site last night . This is a proper Prog site and I was a bit surprised . Proto-Prog Review by friso Prog Reviewer The Beatles - 'The white album' (1968) With' Sgt. Pepper' the legendary Beatles established themselves as the masters of sixties rock development. In '68 the band had already reached it's zenith and 'The white album' is the album that would have been much better if it had been a single lp. Due to the mix of instant classics and material that isn't too interesting spread over 90 minutes I can't really get into this one. Even if it had to be 2lp, why not skip on at least 20 minutes of weaker material? Whereas former albums had a warm production and sound, this album sound plain silly. There's nothing but treble in the mix and even when I equalize it myself I can't help to be bothered by the sis and shaky sound. Furthermore, '68 would prove to be the year the Beatles would be overthrown on all grounds by bands like The Mothers of Invention, The United States of America, The Doors and The Collectors, to name a few. Now, let's not get whimsical. The first lp contains a lot of great songs and the Beatles have never been more eclectic and frantic. The band does show it can find new grounds to explore and some of vocals are really good. With the mix of radio-friendly pop and acidic psych tracks it's kind of a wonder this album became a classic, because a lot of people must have really disliked tracks like 'Helter Skelter' and 'Revolution number 9'. For fans of the progressive genre this album had a lot of diversity and frequently shows how things can sometimes work out all right and sometimes completely fail. Conclusion. An under-produces Beatles album with both of classics, lesser known beauties and misses. Not the first record of the Beatles to get into, but perhaps an adventurous record for fans. Three stars. . So then The White Album is Prog ! Love this song .

The new RUSH album. What does everyone think of it?
I haven't given it much thought but I'm going to risk an act of heresy and say that this record doesn't sound much different from the previous three.
I admit that I need to give it more of an attentive listen to get into it's depths, but please tell me if I'm wrong; Are they musically spinning their wheels now? Is it just me or is the life of the sound production "compressed" right out of it (Like Vapour Trails was) and is the music continuing in the one direction set out by Test For Echo and Vapour Trails?
My Rush journey sort of stalled with Grace Under Pressure. I can still listen to that one but it took getting used to. Power Windows just flew right by me and I heard no reason to believe that the next 2 or 3 albums were any different.
First off, the radical departure from Hemispheres to Permanent Waves, Long concepts to mini concepts and shorter songs was a huge change for us. But those two albums (Permanent Waves/Moving Pictures) were DARN good albums. Then when Signals and Grace... came out, with a lot of adolescent effort to "get" it, those 2 records became very enjoyable to me. But I jumped ship with Power Windows. I got Show Of Hands in '89 to sort of have "The Best Of '85-'89" but I've only heard it in it's entirety once.
Which brings us to Test For Echo. When I heard it about a year or two after it's release, I thought "OK, they're regaining my interest now". So I started paying attention again. Then because it was so long a wait for Vapour Trails, it was enthusiastically received by me,because it was 'rockin''.
But I found snakes and arrows anti climactic and on first listen, the new one too.
So someone tell me why this one is better and why I should delve a bit deeper.
I think what I really need is to listen to it on vinyl. To set the needle down and sink into the experience like in the old days. With 20 minute sides, bite sized portions, easy to digest instead of 60 or 70 straight non stop minutes.
What is wrong with me? Am I bad?
BTW Trick Of The Tail is a great album
yours in traction; Phil Collins

That is a very good point there Amadeus Clockwork is very much like the 3 Rush albums . But . I think this one seems to be done with love . I don`t they set out like the last few to make an album that will be liked by die hards and be easy listening to not so die hards that may discovering Rush in their later years . Like with Vapour Trails it has a few stand out tracks as with Snakes And Arrows but as much as I play them they will never become my favs . Clockwork Angels is slowly growing on me . You have to accept that Geddy is never going to reach those heights of those mind blowing vocals of the 70`s . Headlong Flight is a great tune I think it is where Rush are today . Still a great little rock trio . Roll on May . Oh . Trick Of The Tail . Zz zzzzzzzzzz
