McCartney lines up Beatles albums for the net By WENN world entertainment news - 40 minutes ago
Sir Paul McCartney will reportedly release the entire Beatles back catalogue on download website iTunes - to counter a hefty divorce payout to ex-wife Heather Mills.
A London judge is due to return a decision on 17 March on what settlement Mills will receive, two years after their four-year marriage ended in 2006.
The former glamour model - who represented herself in the divorce case last month - could reportedly walk away with GBP60 million of the singer's estimated GBP825 million personal fortune.
And, according to the Evening Standard, McCartney is aiming to recoup his divorce losses by gradually adding The Beatles' songs and albums to the iTunes store - the first time they've been legally available to download - in the months following the final court hearing.
If the reports are true, the addition of such albums as Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, the White Album and Help! could be worth an estimated GBP200 million.

Some random thoughts about this: 1) It will be GREAT from the point of view of bringing the Beatles to yet another generation. If it ain't on the web, I don't listen to it... 2) The product that will be on the web, assuming typically heavily comressed mp3 format, will be VERY inferior to the albums in terms of listening quality. Many people believe that one of the reasons that music sales in general have fallen is overcompression of songs. For those of us who don't necessarily get under the hood (bonnet) with their music -- overcompression tends to make all parts of a song about the same volume. So, any "expression" imparted by the artist by bringing their playing up and down in volume tends to be lost, and the music becomes less "interesting". 3) Is the decision Paul's to make alone, or don't Ringo/Yoko/Olivia have to sign off on this? Were they already on board, and Paul was the hold up? 4) Shoulda signed that prenup!

You have to love how these Beatles-catalog-about-to-be-reissued stories come up every six months or so and then vanish again. I'm starting to equate them with UFO sightings.

... and fully immersive aural field waves. Beatles Won't Be Available on Next Format, EitherApr 01, 2008 Music fans and record executives of the future, don't get your hopes up: The Beatles' catalog won't be available on the next format to be invented, whatever that is. The band's repeatedly put the kibosh on the latest batch of rumors that the Fab Four's back catalog would soon appear on Apple Computer's iTunes after remaining off the popular music vendors servers for more than seven years. To battle future speculation, a spokesman for The Beatles' record company, Apple Corp., revealed the corporation is actively developing long-long-range plans to delay the band's entry into whatever formats will become popular to future generations. "I've spoken with the estates of John Lennon, George Harrison and the original Paul McCartney," Sharon Michaels said. "All three firmly agree that The Beatles didn't get where they were by being revolutionary or embracing radical ideas. That might be all fine and good for a drug-taking, counterculture hippie like (Apple Computer CEO) Steve Jobs, but conservative English gentlemen like The Beatles just don't live on the wild side like that." The announcement comes as a setback to inventors racing to develop the next medium for music delivery, be it sub-light neurotransmission or the hotly anticipated fully immersive aural field wave. "That's a rough blow, but it's expected," said Georgetown University researcher Dr. Alan Montoya, working on grants from Bose to develop a system to channel music directly into the aural centers of the brain. "Fortunately, the music industry is full of free-thinking, risk-takers like Conway Twitty, Johnny Mathis and Toby Keith who'll keep embracing both technological and social innovations with wild abandon." www.aversion.com/news/news_article.cfm?news_id=10419

I believe the Beatles catalogue will be released by November of this year or in 09. It will be like Beatlemania all over again one last time. Paul & Ringo along with rhe Lennon/Harrison estates shouldn't wait much longer.

I believe the Beatles catalogue will be released by November of this year or in 09. Not inconceivable, but who knows, and don't bet any of your own money on it. In the meantime, go help yourself to some Purple Chick releases; Apple/EMI aren't likely to do it nearly as well, apart from issuing (I hope) better masters. 6plus3.wordpress.com/category/purple-chick/
