I've always wanted to hear the version that George Martin turned down!
Then John and Paul sped it up, brought it back in, it replaced "How Do You Do It", and the rest is history!!

Yeah, the "Roy Orbison" version, as Paul called it on Anthology. It's tragic that so many session tapes were wiped in the early sixties.

On the Anthology dvd, Paul sings a small bit of it. Indeed, in Roy Orbison style.

Yeah, the "Roy Orbison" version, as Paul called it on Anthology. It's tragic that so many session tapes were wiped in the early sixties. On the contrary. EMI had a policy of never throwing anything out, or wiping it. Practically everything they recorded is on tape, and the tapes were often left rolling between takes. They may have played the slower version to George Martin, but that doesn't mean he recorded it. As far as I know, the earliest known studio recording of PPM is from 11 Sept. 1962, and that's on Anthology 1.

I believe there are quite a few sessions missing from the early sixties including some tapes from the Please Please Me sessions such as Take 2 of Twist and Shout, also the first takes of Hold Me Tight and Don't Bother Me. In addition I believe the master tape of Love Me Do (with Ringo on drums) is also missing, prompting EMI to release a version recorded from a record when it was re-released on the 12" single in 1982. The master tapes of She Loves You are also missing.
With regards to wiping tapes - I don't know if this was EMI policy but around the time of Revolver, engineers took to rewinding the tape and recording over the previous take if it was deemed not good enough. Consequently there are few out-takes from this period.
George Martin had this to say in 1995 regarding the Anthology project:
"They really know how to look after their tapes. Those that they have kept, that is, because they destroyed an awful lot of the early ones. In fact, there are few tapes left from the early 1962-63 sessions. A lot of the material that has come to light from that period has been in the from of laquers and acetate discs. Occasionally, some quarter inch tapes have emerged, but no masters as such. We only managed to get hold of two tracks from the very first session the boys did in June 1962, and I happened to have one of them. My wife found it and it transpired that no one else had it. That was Love Me Do, the other being Besame Mucho, both with Pete Best on drums. There are other things which I thought had gone forever, such as an early version of Please Please Me which we recorded in September 1962. It doesn't have the harmonica on it but it's very interesting, with a totally different drum sound."

OK. So Lewisohn stating that the first actual recording of PPM was 11/9/62 might just be because that's the earliest recording in existence? Though there is no record of them having attempted a recording on the two previous visits to Abbey Road. Which was why I was suggesting that they ran through it, but never recorded it. After all, at that stage I don't think EMI would have been recording every fart and belch!
