Hi! I was just listening to The Decca Tapes version of the song. It is so different the 'With The Beatles' version. So, I was wondering how did they decide to make such a radical change with song. To start with, there is a change of key. Drums are also different (of course, Ringo wasn't there). George's new guitar fills are magical. Do you think they decided to change it by themselves or George Martin influenced them?

This was a song they performed live over and over again, so it's possible it just simply evolved into the familiar With The Beatles version - in those days George H arrison rarely played the same solo twice! To explain the key - it may be that you are listening to un-speed-corrected version of the tapes. For years, the Decca sessions were pitched way too high, i.e. speeded up - this may be why the key is different. I would have to compare the two side-by-side to be 100% certain about the key, however it is quite likey to be the pitch difference. AL

I've played it in my guitar and in the Decca version the pitch is definitely higher, that's why you can hear paul singin falsetto's in some parts

Yes, sounds like the version you have may be sped up and therefore pitched higher.

I am sure George Martin did have a major influence on the arrangement of this song. According to Lewisohns Recording Sessions they recorded it once and then did a complete re-make about a week later. It's got George Martin's arranging hand all over it.

There is a rumour that George never actually played the solo on this and they got a session musician in to do the solo. I can't remember where I read this but the piece said something along the lines that the solo was that complex that it couldn't have been Harrison playing it. Complete bollocks obviously but I just thought I would share that with you all.

In fairness, it does sound like he flubbed one part of the solo at the Royal Command Performance (by memory, maybe the start of the 2nd bar of the solo?) - but I would put that down to nerves!
It was also mooted that GH couldn't play the AHDN solo - probably didn't help that the first BBC session version of it cuts back to the studio version for the solo! However, you can hear him playing it faultlessly on Live at the Hollywood Bowl - and there is footage of the performance at Shea Stadium.
Another lousy rumour, as they say!
