I have a question. Why did Paul McCartney play the lead guitar break on Taxman, when Geroge was more than capable of handling it?

All I know is that George asked him to play it, and was very pleased with it.
"I was pleased to have Paul play that bit on 'Taxman'. If you notice, he did like a little Indian bit on it for me."
Maybe George thought he (George) wasn't up to it.

There are multiple stories about this. Another version that I heard was that, in order to give George the prime opening spot on the album, he had to do a little negotiating, the compromise being that yes, they would do his song first, but Paul would play lead on it.
It's hard to say. Geoff Emerick perpetuates the rumor that George couldn't play it, but his views of George's guitar playing have been beaten upside the head by every guitar player I've ever heard asked about it.
I would like to think that it wasn't a matter of incompetence or pushy arrogance-- that the band was quite happy with each other at the time (which they were) and George in all actuality didn't mind Paul playing the lead, because Paul would only ever get that opportunity in the studio. So he "was pleased to have Paul play that bit", just like he said, with no other insinuations present.

Have you noticed that Paul plays guitar sometimes on "the others" songs? He has claimed it was his own way to keep things fair - you play lead on MY songs, I can play on yours. Remember, Paul was probably AS GOOD as the others on guitar!
