You're right, they STILL don't understand that this wasn't a boast! John Lennon was right when he said he should have said TV was more popular than Jesus!

After 40 years the Catholic church still do not want to admit a worldwide decline in christianity. Lennon was right then and it is even more true now. As you say if only he had compared christianity to something else other than the Beatles then their wouldn't have been half the fuss.

Haha...yesterday at orchestra rehearsal one of my friends (who knows of and teases me over my Beatle obsession) said, "Hey, did you hear the Vatican forgave John Lennon?" And I started cracking up. She didn't actually know what he had said ( ), so I had to explain. Didn't know they decided on the he-was-a-young-and-misguided rationalization though.

Didn't know they decided on the he-was-a-young-and-misguided rationalization though. 25 years old seemed a lot older then than it does now. Lennon had lived more of life than most people even by 1966. This shows again how out of touch the Vatican and catholic church where then and still are now. It brings a smile to my face thinking of those idiots in the bible belts of America who stamped and burnt all those records and posters that they must feel a bit foolish now. Saying that a lot where just young kids being brainwashed into doing it by misguided adults.

I actually find their reasons for absolving Lennon of his sins incredibly condescending!

Yeah. They're not saying they get why he said it, they're saying that he didn't know what he was talking about but they forgive him anyway. What's the point of forgiving him then?

I was brought up catholic too but strayed the path of righteousness when I was about 10 years old. Funnily enough it was right about the time I found The Beatles.
