Hi Guys !! I Bought My Hofner President Circa 1955 Model At The Begining Of This Year As I Was Determined To Own A Similar Model And Of The Same Vintage As A Guitar Owned By One Of The Lads ! And As This Was Always Going To Be An Expensive Ambition To Fulfiull I Opted For A Similar Model To That Owned By 15 Year Old George, Which He Purchased 1958 Just Prior To Becoming A Quarryman . I Love The Vintage Sound Of This Guitar, As Being Only Modestly Talented As A Player I Still Get A Buzz From Playing The Buddy , Elvis Et Al Numbers That He Would Have Played Along With The Guys Way Back , And Knowing In A Small Way I Have " Connected " With Him , I Just Would Like To Add That I Also Purchased " Play In A Day " By Bert Weedon For Like Reasons !! Sooooo ! What Guitar Did You Buy And Who Inspired You To Buy It

Great Pics Of A Classic Guitar ! My Next Purchase Will Be Either A Rick Or A Gretsch But I Think Not Of A Similiar Vintage As One Owned By The guys, Which Are Now Fetching Mega Bucks ( For My Budget !!! ) And Preferably Of A Short Scale ( Any Advices Here Guys ?? As I Haven,t Got A Clue !! ) As Me Hands Are On The Small Side ! I,m About Half Way Through With Reading, " The Beatles Gear " Which Is Fascinating And, "Unputdownable " This Publication Ranks With The " Complete Beatles Chronicles " In My Book !! Didn,t The Beatles "Sell" Countless Units Of Equipment For Guitar Manufactures Not To Mention Amplifiers And Drums ( But I Just Did ! ) Over The Years And No doubt Still Continue To Do So To This Day !

Can anyone inform me about this: my local guitarshop owner told me that mister Rickenbacker is into the KKK? He wants to keep the brand into the USA and handmade by white hands and that's why his production is so low?? I had never heard this before. Anyone? Anyway, he had a Rickenbacker in his shop and I was eager to hold it in my hands. I did and even got to play it. To be honest: it did not play very nice at all! Not to my accounts. But then again: last night the wife told me she couldn't walk on those high heels. I answered that she wasn't supposed to walk on them. Sort of same thing, right?

Not heard that story before! KKK??? Very bizarre! Not sure about high-heels - I'll have to take your word for it!! I have played a Rickenbacker before and was surprised at how small it was!! Played ok for me though, but I'm not that good anyway!!! LOL

Not sure about high-heels - I'll have to take your word for it!! I think it's pretty much a given that high heels are stylish torture devices. That somehow still make us feel good. It's really not very logical. As for guitars...I have not a clue. All my knowledge is in the realm of violins.

Thanks for the insight into heels anyway Any knowledge on the Hofner VIOLIN bass ? A what now? I've heard a bit of electric violin though. My private teacher plays it in a band, actually.

This is quite a famous violin bass... Ooooh, because it looks sortof violinish. *facepalm* See, I was going, "what would constitute a violin bass?" Never thought about it being the shape. Actually shaped more like a string bass than a violin though. With the slope up from the shoulders to the neck. Yes, thank you for my massive duh moment.

Jay Turser makes an exact replica of Paul's Hofner with an attractive price. Epiphone makes a similar one too called the "Viola".

Not to be picky-picky-picky, but it's Hofner "Viol" bass, not "violin" bass. A viol shape has the body tapering into the neck, whereas the violin body comes in at a right angle. In past centuries, there were viols of various sized, but now the only viol commonly played is the bass viol, also known as the string bass, bass fiddle, upright bass, etc.
I own a Gretsch Electromatic 5120, which costs a fraction of the Gretsch 6120. I also have a small Vox modeling amp, but because the 5120 has humbuckers, I have to put the amp on a Fender setting if I want to sound like George on Beatles For Sale. I came close to getting the 5122 for $30 more. The 5122 resembles George's Country Gent, but again at a fraction of the price. I came even closer to getting an Epiphone, but the Epiphones were so shopworn I suspected they would not hold up.

, I Just Would Like To Add That I Also Purchased " Play In A Day " By Bert Weedon
I did a tour with Bert in the 1970's as compere/singer. I said to him when we started the tour 'do you mind how I introduce you'? he said 'no, whatever you like'. I said 'here is a living legend, I bought his book, play in a day' lying bastard'!!!! Everyone fell about laughing, including Bert, he made me say the same thing every night, great bloke. By the way, I think one of the best guitars about is a Fender Strat', I have used Strat's all the time, they take more 'road wear' then any guitar I know. I am using a 15 year old one that's been halfway round the world, used non-stop, and is still going well and 100% reliable. It was given to me by a good Friend 'Mike Lane' a Country singer, he gave it to me for helping him put his last CD together, and writing some songs for him. You can hear him singing one of my songs on youtube, just type in mike lane ebay.
