If I'm being totally honest here I'd have to say that this is simply not my cup of tea....and I really love tea by the way! I would give you the pin number of my Bank card if you played this at me enough times (once!), as I find it truly truly awful, especially the 2 'Bonus' tracks which sound as though they were recorded during Karaoke night at the Grapes!.....That said though, the price is very reasonable and I think this would make a really nice stocking filler for Christmas!!!

Friends (who came from Brazil) were formed in 1968 and played at BW in 1997 and possibly 1998.
The Beagles were American record execs in 1964 who wore the wigs that are so common in modern Beatle bands - although they may have been more spoof than tribute.
and i'm sure there's other's too from the 60s.

To answer the question, this could well have been the first recorded tribute band. Embassy used ad hoc session musos on their records. I must admit we had a couple of early Embassy covers in the family collection, to be played at parties. Quite a bit cheaper than the major labels, Embassy were sold through Woolworth's. None of the Merseybeat groups covered Beatles own numbers as I recall; although the resident musicians at the various social clubs always covered the top ten. Similarly, on the radio bands such as Joe Loss would include their version of whatever was topping the charts.
