So it's Saturday night and Mrs Mustard says 'there's nothing on the telly, how about a DVD?' I pull out something I haven't watched since its release; Backbeat.
Does any Beatle fan worth their salt think this is any good? Sure, if it was about a fictitious band it would be a good film. It opens with John and Stu in a bar in Liverpool heckling the singer on stage. Some sailors get a bit pissed off with them and beat the crap out of them. This is where, apparantly, Stu receives injurys that caused hs brain haemorrhage. There are at least three 'official' stories as to how Stuart received this injury (outside the Litherland town hall, falling down the stairs at Astrids or John did it), all of which have either been proved wrong or highly unlikely. Ok, I can kind of let that one go as there's a lot of conjecture around this. So next the movie moves on to Hamburg. Bizarrely there's no reference to Alan Williams but there is an actor portraying Lord Woodbine. Ok, so that may be a bit obscure for your average Beatle fan/movie goer. I'll let it go. They reach Hamburg and immediately start playing the Kaiserkeller. What happened to the Indra? From the off they are this fully polished band and Paul is moaning about a couple of bum notes at the end of a song from an otherwise fine bass performance. Have these producers not heard the Star Club recordings?
Next we have them in the headquarters of Polydor records in a plush reception trying to get a recording deal off Bert Kampfert. Oh really? Next, Bert is down at the Kaiserkeller Apparantly interested in signing the band but no one is mentioning Tony Sheridan. Next there is some weird jealousy between Stu and Klaus. Then John apparantly fancies Astrid and is Jealous of Stu's and Astrids relationship. Whilst in Hamburg they believe they will be the biggest thing in the world and meet Elvis.
What's other people's view on this film? I think it's crap. Birth Of The Beatles is far from perfect but much more believable.
