My near-obsession with officially-remastered Beatles product has been much mitigated by the discovery of the PC Deluxe series of albums. I'm not nearly so anxious for "the real thing" now...
PC has done an absolutely astounding job compiling these albums and the sound quality is tremendous. Sooner or later Apple/EMI will issue the Beatles catalog in remastered form, but I'll say this: they will have to go completely all-out to impress anyone who's gotten familiar with the PC discs. And I mean all out. To get my dollars not only will they have to raise the bar on sonic quality but the packaging will have to be drop-dead awesome. If they come out in regular jewel cases I won't even bother. I want matte-finish digipaks with restored hi-def original cover art (slipcases would be nice too), I want nice thick booklets with expertly-written, complete notes...
Years ago I shelled out bucks for a mono "Pepper" boot on cd. I was excited to hear all the differences from the stereo mix that I'd read about. Well, I heard those differences but the overall sound quality was crap and I only listened to it once. When I found the PC Pepper Deluxe I was skeptical at first due to that experience but let me tell you, the mono Pepper disc is fabulous (so are all the others). This is the listening experience I'd been hoping for and been let down on previously.
Ditto for the mono White Album.
This is to say "thanks" to those PC folks for their outstanding efforts. Beatles fans everywhere ought to be eternally grateful. I know I am.
