Does anyone know what date / time and with what camera, type of film the original was taken on ? I was wondering what the format / frame size was (35mm, 120mm, 6 x 6) Any information at all would be very useful. Such as weather a tripod was used or was it taken handheld. I would like to try to recreate the original iconic image. Obviously, there are some things missing like the Beatles, VW Beetle and foliage from the trees but this is my first attempt:- Many thanks for your time.

As you probably know Iain Macmillian took the shot. It was taken on 8th August 1969 at about 11.30 am and the whole shoot lasted about 10 minutes. Macmillan took the shot standing on a step ladder about 10 foot up in the air in the middle of the road. He took 6 photos and Paul picked out the best from the negatives which was the 5th shot. The negatives measure 3 inches x 2.5 inches. Macmillan used a Hasselblad camera, with a 50 mm wide-angle lens, aperture f22, at 1/500 sec. I have no idea what the last sentence means but there you go. Check out this link www.norwegianwood.org/beatles/english/albumcovers14.html

Sadly the photo is actually impossible to recreate as the crossing was moved some years ago - the giveaway is the placing of the water main cover (it makes me sad that I actually know where the water main cover is!!! LOL!). I think it was moved further from the junction and is now closer to the studio that it was back in 1969.

I put this very question to Richard and he said its a popular misconception that the crossing had been moved and had a very good reason why (which I have forgotten!). He is telling everyone that goes on his tour that this is the original crossing. I don't know who to believe now!!

Ooooh interesting stuff!! I have found the original article that said the crossing was moved but having compared a few pics I now agree with Richard Porter. This photo seems even more conclusive, especially when compared to the one below it! Here is an extract from that article: The original zebra crossing, where the photograph was taken, was moved several metres for traffic management reasons more than 30 years ago, and no original features remain.
A spokesman for Westminster City Council said: "The detail of exactly when and why the crossing was moved from its original location have been lost in the annals of time.
"But by comparing photographs with the Ordnance Survey maps, we believe that the crossing might have been further north nearer 3 Abbey Road, which was the front house of the EMI Studios, because the steps of Neville Court appear to the right of the crossing in original photographs of the crossing, whereas the present crossing is near the junction of Abbey Road and Grove End Road."Full article here: www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-12059385Some great pics from the photo session here: wogew.blogspot.co.uk/2011/08/road-goes-on-forever.htmlAnd on a side note, this made me shudder!!!!

I can see why you were convinced it has been moved. It just goes to show that just because the authorities tell you something it doesn't always mean its true.
Where the cavern stands now there use to be a small car park to the right as you look at it. It was put round, by Liverpool City Council, that original Cavern was under that car park. You and I both know that's not true and in fact the original Cavern occupies the space of the space of the current Cavern albeit the original wasn't as low down and the stage was around by where the bar is currently in the back. Or is that another scurrilous rumour!!
