I especially love talking about the 1966-67 and 1970-71 era which includes PET SOUNDS, the song GOOD VIBRATIONS, the newly released SMiLE SESSIONS BOXSET, SUNFLOWER and SURF'S UP albums. Lets talk some BEACH BOYS, here's one from them, enjoy!

I thought there might have been a previous Beach Boys topic but I can't find it either! Maybe it was meant for me to start this thread seeing that I do have a history with THE BEACH BOYS. The first BEACH BOY that I ever met was the late great Dennis Wilson, on my 20th "B" Day in 1981 through Ed Roach. From then on, I would party with Denny the last two years of his life. In those two years, I have a few crazy stories to tell that involves Denny. To this day, those two years were two of the greatest years in my life. Here's another song from THE BEACH BOYS, enjoy!

I like The Beach Boys When I was a young teenager I listened to the best of the beach boys until I wore it out . ( it was a cassette, remember them ?) Now here`s a thing . Pet Sounds . It must be here or there in the top all time albums lists It`s number 2 in the Rolling Stone mag all time top 500 . So it`s up there with the best in critics and people in the music biz . But for me I don`t like it what so ever Apart from Sloop John B and God Only Knows there is not a good let a lone a great song on it . Yes do have and god I have tried to listen to it many times , but it just does`nt work for me . Is there anyone out there that would have it in there all time top ten ? It wouldnt make my top 500 . Sorry .

Music is something that you can't push on people, either you like it or you don't. Music speaks for itself, thats the way it should be. Thank you for your honesty mrkite, I wouldn't have it any other way. Take care.

I guess I'm a casual fan. I have the 1994 box set and the Pet Sounds box set. And I have, and really like, every album from Wild Honey up to Holland. I guess my faves would be Sunflower and Surf's Up. Is that what you had in mind?
Oh yeah,, I REALLY like the Carl and the Passions songs by Dennis and Daryl Dragon.

For being a casual fan amadeus, you're not doing bad at all. I also like some of the songs off the albums that you mentioned. Do you like Denny's PACIFIC OCEAN BLUE album from 1977?

I'll tell you what happened; Around 1986, I met a guy who was a BB fanatic. Up to that point, I thought the Beach Boys were all 'surfin usa' and he set about convincing me that that was a fallacy. So, as a result, I gained a greater appreciation for the 'beach' stuff by being exposed to their 'later' stuff. Up to 1973 that is. He and I both agreed that Holland was the last great album.
I began to appreciate Brian's musical and production genius. I read "Wouldn't It Be Nice", which I understand Brian has since disowned. I made my way through "Look, Listen, Vibrate, Smile". Just imagining the anticipation and subsequent disappointment when the album was cancelled.
Which IMO had a devastating impact on their fortunes for the next several years, because I think all those albums that barely sold a million between all of them, were FAR better than the sales figures show.
I also got to know about Carl's genius after Brian abdicated. Carl and The Passions is a wonderful record and I like Blondie's and Ricky's contribution to the group on that one and Holland
Surf's Up is a great record. I even like the so-called "filler" tracks. I totally love "A Day In The Life Of A Tree". Moving stuff.
And what is there not to like about "Slip On Through" and "It's About Time". I really believe that if Brian was cared about a bit better, he might've finished Smile, and all the subsequent albums would be recognised as great Beach Boys albums rather than footnotes in their history that only a few people really know.
Friends and Wild Honey (so bloody short) are really laid back and soulful listening. Really pleasant albums. And Dennis, I guess, really surprised everybody and came up with some really good songs for a partying Beach Boy.
20/20. A Hodge podge collection. The Manson song is a bit chilling, knowing the origin of it. Again Dennis! "Be With Me" is an absolutely beautiful song.
There's not much to say about Pet Sounds. I played it to death!
And as I said, it all helped me to appreciate the earlier stuff much more. I do have to say, though, that after hearing the 30 minutes of Smile out takes on the '94 box set, Smiley Smile became a bit of a disappointment. They totally put "Vegetables" right to sleep, it seems.
I know about Denny's album and all sources point to it being a classic but I have to admit that I couldn't hum 1 song off of it. Ach! I feel so inadequate!
