I'll tell you what happened; Around 1986, I met a guy who was a BB fanatic. Up to that point, I thought the Beach Boys were all 'surfin usa' and he set about convincing me that that was a fallacy. So, as a result, I gained a greater appreciation for the 'beach' stuff by being exposed to their 'later' stuff. Up to 1973 that is. He and I both agreed that Holland was the last great album. I began to appreciate Brian's musical and production genius. I read "Wouldn't It Be Nice", which I understand Brian has since disowned. I made my way through "Look, Listen, Vibrate, Smile". Just imagining the anticipation and subsequent disappointment when the album was cancelled. Which IMO had a devastating impact on their fortunes for the next several years, because I think all those albums that barely sold a million between all of them, were FAR better than the sales figures show. I also got to know about Carl's genius after Brian abdicated. Carl and The Passions is a wonderful record and I like Blondie's and Ricky's contribution to the group on that one and Holland Surf's Up is a great record. I even like the so-called "filler" tracks. I totally love "A Day In The Life Of A Tree". Moving stuff. And what is there not to like about "Slip On Through" and "It's About Time". I really believe that if Brian was cared about a bit better, he might've finished Smile, and all the subsequent albums would be recognised as great Beach Boys albums rather than footnotes in their history that only a few people really know. Friends and Wild Honey (so bloody short) are really laid back and soulful listening. Really pleasant albums. And Dennis, I guess, really surprised everybody and came up with some really good songs for a partying Beach Boy. 20/20. A Hodge podge collection. The Manson song is a bit chilling, knowing the origin of it. Again Dennis! "Be With Me" is an absolutely beautiful song. There's not much to say about Pet Sounds. I played it to death! And as I said, it all helped me to appreciate the earlier stuff much more. I do have to say, though, that after hearing the 30 minutes of Smile out takes on the '94 box set, Smiley Smile became a bit of a disappointment. They totally put "Vegetables" right to sleep, it seems. I know about Denny's album and all sources point to it being a classic but I have to admit that I couldn't hum 1 song off of it. Ach! I feel so inadequate! Hi amadeus! Are you sure that you're a casual BEACH BOYS fan, you know quite a bit about THE BEACH BOYS for being a casual fan. You're not inadequate, you're just a casual BEACH BOYS fan! Ha Ha! Being a casual BEACH BOYS fan, it is expected that you don't know much about Denny's album. When you get a chance, you ought to hear it. Take care.

Incidentally, I have most of those albums on vinyl. The crazy pairing of Pet Sounds with "So Tough", I guess just to make it sell. Holland with the 7" Mount Vernon and Fairway. And the yellowish ones with the bikini girl paintings. Those pairings of the last 4 sixties albums.
Yeah, we're casual...

Brian is the only one that I keep in touch with, all of the others, I don't. I met Denny in 1981 and was friends with him until his death in December 1983. Brian, I've been friends with ever since 1981.

Wow. How is he with friends? I always worry about him when he's being interviewed.

Wow. How is he with friends? I always worry about him when he's being interviewed. Everything that Brian is now, its because of his wife Melinda. If it wouldn't have been for his wife Melinda, I don't think that Brian would be here now. Its not a matter of how Brian is with friends such as I, it is if Melinda will let Brian be around his old friends. In reality, Melinda is very protective over Brian as well as Brian's career. Not to mention that thanks to Melinda, Brian got the Psychiatric care he really needed. Because of this, Brian is taking medication that is desperately needed for his Auditory Hallucinations mental illness.

I don't blame her for being so protective. If even half of what he wrote in "Wouldn't It Be Nice" is true, he has a classic out of control addictive personality. He wouldn't be able to say no. I'm glad he has the meds for the mental problems. I remember when he hit the road for Pet Sounds in '96(? or was it '01?), I thought that was a huge step forward for him.

The PET SOUNDS tour was in 2001-02. I saw that tour along with the SMiLE tour in 2004. I also saw Brian at the Hollywood Bowl in 2008. Its really a miracle that Brian is now a live performer, no one, including myself, never thought it was possible.

I've been giving some serious air time to Sunflower for a couple of days. It's a brilliant album. And that ridiculous expensive and tedious recording technique sure does pay off in headphones.
Is "All I Wanna Do" the first 'shoegaze/dreampop' song ever?

Today, Dec 17/11 I just contributed my 2 cents worth to the Beach Boys world. Click the 'homepage' to see that one and other goodies that the site over there lets me contribute.

PEPPER" album, that pretty much sums up the SUNFLOWER album. Take care.

As any music fan will know, THE BEACH BOYS, including BRIAN WILSON, will do a Reunion Tour in 2012 in order to celebrate the band's 50th Anniversary.
In my opinion, I hope that Mike and Brian can put aside their differences and be together again as THE BEACH BOYS, even if it is for the last time. However, I do have my doubts and I always get the feeling that it will be a matter of time before Mike resorts to his old ways and gets pushy with Brian. However, Mike had better think seriously about it on the Reunion Tour 2012, Brian's wife Melinda manages and takes care of Brian 24/7. Melinda is also very protective of Brian, if Mike starts up his sh*t in front of Melinda, I promise you that Melinda is going to tear Mike a new a*s!

I guess David Marks and Bruce Johnson are going to make up the missing numbers. I don't think that there'll be any problem between Mike and Brian. Mike is very well aware that most of the money and song credit problems were caused by Murray. And when it came to court in (was it) the '90s, Brian was pretty open about the truth of the song writing because he knew his dad screwed up. That's what I've read.
I think it's Mike and Al that have to make peace isn't it?

Mike and Al have a bad feud going as well, it looks like everyone has a bad feud going with Mike including myself. Ha Ha!
