Is there are a particular Beatles song or album you remember hearing for the very first time? What was your first reaction? I'll kick things off... When my Aunt left home to get married, she left her Beatle collection at my Nan's house, which eventually found my way to my house! I managed to purloin a few albums (Rubber Soul, With The Beatles and Help!), some of their early singles, two EPs and the 1964 Fan Club single... shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!! So I was already a big fan when at the age of about 7 or 8 I stopped playing the I Want To Hold Your Hand single, flipped it over and played the B-side - This Boy. It was an incredible moment... I remember I was standing by the window, melting wax with a magnify glass , when the opening chords and three-part harmonies kicked in... I will never forget it! And then John Lennon sang the "oh and this boy..." bit and I realised this was something a bit special. I must have played that track a million times that afternoon (ok, bit of an exaggeration there!) and I still have that actual worn-out copy to this day! And this is absolutely true - the smell of burning wax still reminds me of the song today! What about you - any memories of your first Beatle song experiences?

First Beatle record i bought was Sgt Pepper when i was 12. I vaguely remember Ready Steady Go when i was a kid and my Mum said when they were on the telly ,i was glued to it . I only bought the record for the cover as i didn't know any of the tracks. I was only used to their very early records and after the first play ,i actually didn't think it was The Beatles !! After about the third play i was completely hooked, i remember thinking to myself that i'd never heard anything like this before. After that i bought "A Collection of Beatle Oldies but Goldies" and then started reading about them and collecting all the L'Ps......Memories !!

Around 1967 I used to purchase my albums by mail order. There was something exciting and intriguing about the postman delivering the albums and it was always a thrill opening the packaging. About June time 1967 I had ordered Sgt Pepper and the day came when, after many days of eager anticipation, the package was delivered. The first thing that hit me was the smell of the album. It was so evocative I can almost smell the album cover as I'm writing this. The next thing that really blew me away was the design of the cover itself and when I looked inside and saw the cardboard cut-outs I couldn't believe it! Now I was ready to listen to the album and nervously placing the stylus on the run -in grooves on the vinyl 'LP' I sat back and for around 40 minutes I was mesmerized. I remember thinking 'All the tracks seem to run into one and there's no silence between any of the tracks' When it came to the end of side 2 and the run-out groove kept repeating some garbled mystical nonsense I thought 'What the *!"? is this?, then I had to eventually manually lift off the arm from the record. Normally, this would be automatic. The music itself just enthralled me. I hadn't heard anything like it at all. Anyway, at that particular time, there was a fun fair in the local village and I had arranged to go and call on my mate for a look around the 'shows'. Needless to say I was late (there were no mobile phones in those days and we coudn't afford a proper house phone) because I listened to Sgt Pepper about 4 times! I remember chattering away to my mate about the album, not being able to contain my excitement! And to this day, every time I visit a fun fair, the memories, the excitement and that smell of the record cover come flooding back. Happy days.
