I love Rock any Rock but I think that the most interseting one that can have you debating for hours on end is Progressive Rock . So here is a thread that I hope can get the Proggers on here talkin about there fave album and you know how it works . First up Pink Floyd . Any fans ? Anyone going to the Wall next year ? Roger Waters has just announced 2 more Manchester gigs in June , 28, 29 . I have a ticket for the 21st of May and I`m going to the night before hoping to get a ticket for that too Respect to Jimi who died 40 years ago today .

I too am a big progressive rock fan. I like Pink Floyd with my favourite album being Wish You Were Here. Best track for me is Shine On You Crazy Diamond (part I - V). The chord changes and especially the guitar are just inspirational.
I must admit that have never understood why Syd Barrett is so revered. His guitar playing and singing are average (and that's being polite!) and his songs were several leagues below anything Pink Floyd did after he left. I just don't get it.
My favourite progressive rock bands are Yes and King Crimson. The day and night of progressive rock if you like. If anyone wants to start listening to these bands but not sure were to start then The Yes album and Fragile are a good way to start for Yes. As regards King Crimson no one should be without the albums In The Court Of The Crimson King and Red. In fact, for anyone who loves music should own these albums regardless of what genre they like.
I would really class The Beatles as a progressive rock band in the true sense of the term. Discuss!!!

Your spot on mrmusterd about Sid after he left Floyd I have both his Solo albums and they are poor and so how much mother nature I sampled when listening to them in my late teens they still sounded bad. Spot on again with the Yes albums . My first L.p. was Going For The One which is a great album , but when I went and bought Fragile and Close To The Edge I was hooked . Love Crimson . You must check out Discipline Mr Musty it`s quality As for the Fabs and Prog , I got a load of stick on a forum for classing them as Prog . Pepper was the birth of Prog ! A Day In The Life is experimental not a boy meets girl song and have orchestral madness and even a Alam clock , how more Prog can you get .

I keep saying I am going to get Discipline. I think Frame by Frame is off that which is a great track.
The Beatles are a progressive rock band in the truest sense of the word. I agree with you, they are responsible for prog!
Have you heard any Gentle Giant? I saw Vandergraaf Generator a couple of years ago in Liverpool. They where great, especially the singer Peter Hamill.
I am going to see Jon Anderson and Rick Wakeman in few weeks. Really looking forward to that!

I recently got the complete Gentle Giant cataloge and I keep putting on Octopus as it`s supposed to be a classic prog album , but to me it sounds like Steely Span than a prog album .
Van Der graff. I have not heard much of their stuff Watch This it`s brill

Hey Mr Kite! I went to see The Anderson Wakeman Project last night at the Philharmonic in Liverpool. Great show. Just Rick on keyboards and Jon singing as well as playing acoustic guitar. They did loads of stuff from The Yes Album, Fragile and Going For The One as well as other Yes songs. They have also released a new album, The Living Tree, which they played tracks from also.
The rumour is they are going to get together with Trevor Rabin and there is talk that Bill Bruford may come out retirement to join them. Now that would really piss the current 'Yes' line up right off if it came off, but it would be all they deserve.

Eh up Musty me old mate . Jon and Rick are Prog legends, glad you enjoyed it. The purse strings are a bit tight at the Kite house at the mo , so I have had to miss this tour That little line up with Bill and Rabin sounds a bit mouth watering as much as I like Steve Howe , it would give the Yes sound a new direction as I think they would record a new album to tour with , as with the other Yes are just resting on the laurels and just playing the classics . Just a little question for ya What is your fave Yes album ? And Why / that`s 2 questions

If push comes to shove I would have to say Fragile purely for a consistently high level of songwriting and high production values. The leap in production from The Yes Album to Fragile is quite astonishing.
However I really like tracks from other albums; Sweetness from the first album, just about everything off The Yes Album, Does It Really Happen from Drama (very overlooked album in my view), It Can Happen To You from 90125. The list would go on but when it comes down to it, it has to be Fragile. Heart of the Sunrise and Southside of The Sky are truely some of the finest examples of songwriting and musicianship one is ever likely to hear. In fact, I would go so far as to say that Yes, writing at this level, rival even some of The Beatles best work. (let the backlash begin!)

Fragile is indeed a brilliant album I have much fondness for Going For The One as it was my first . Awaken and Turn Of The Century are , as you say up there with some of the Beatles song writing ( love a debate ) I camped out for The Who at the Manchester Apollo the night Yes played on the Drama tour . said this many times I know but I can`t ever think of going seeing Yes without the man .. jon Anderson . But I did have a sneak round the back and had s listen

To be honest it's an album I don't play that much. When it was remastered a few years ago I asked for it as a Christmas present off my partners brother and wife at whom we happened to go to Christmas dinner for that year. I managed to play it on Christmas day while we were having dinner. I feel quite guilty about it now!
Continuing on the Yes theme, there will be a new Yes album next year with Trevor Horn producing. I say Yes album, it's that band masquerading as Yes without Jon Anderson as lead singer!

And there`s me saying that they would be living on past glories Imagine listening to a Yes album with the words and voice of Jon Drama was bad enough . Their on tour next year as well , I won`t be going . Got my Rush ticket for May last week .Looking forward to that already

I like 'Drama'. Go figure.
Kansas has always been one of my favorite bands. Leftoverture, Point Of No Return, and Masque are all masterpieces in my opinion. Early Genesis with Gabriel is great too. Actually, I dig early Ambrosia also. They have some really good stuff.

Drama is a brilliant album! Even without Jon Anderson! Now there is an awesome drummer - Alan White. I take it you are a drummer tkitna? Who is the best drummer out of the following Alan White, Charlie watts, bill bruford, ringo? There is a prize for the correct answer!

Bruford - Probably the most technical for sure. Does amazing things. White - Nice combination of technical skills with feel. I love his drumming and would choose him out of this group. Ringo and Charlie - I put them in the same class. Ringo is more unorthodox and has more feel, but Charlie is more techinal.

That's some list! Talking of beatle related drummers, have you ever seen jim gordon live? If so, how did he compare to keltner? Unfortunatly i've never seen Gorodon live, but apart from him going psycho and killing his mother, Jim is one of my favorite drummers ever. His break on Mason Williams 'Overture' is nothing more than magical. My passion for drummers really comes down to the studio boys. Sounds strange, but thats where I look for inspiration. My favorite drummers are- Hal Blaine (all time favorite) Earl Palmer Jim Keltner Jim Gordon Dave Mattacks Andy Newmark Rick Marotta Gary Chester Russ Kunkel Steve Gadd Jeff Porcaro and of course some that were not studio guys- Ringo Dino Danelli Phil Ehart Tony Thompson Simon Kirke Clem Burke Who are some of yours Mr. M?
