Who do you think were The Beatles' biggest rivals in the Sixties - not just commercially but creatively and musically?

Hmm, I think commercially, The Rolling Stones are who pop into my head. They were their biggest competition as far as "selling" really goes. I don't really think that the Stones were EVER on the same plane as The Beatles musically or creatively...sure they did some good stuff, but never anything like what The Beatles were doing.
The Beach Boys I think competed with The Beatles quite a bit as well, only with them, they also had the creative rivalry thing going on, especially with Paul McCartney being so influenced by their sound.

I agree. None of the British bands came close to The Beatles musically or creatively in the early to mid sixties. I think the American bands such as The Beach Boys, Crosby, Stills, Nash (and Young) and Jimi Hendrix were much closer to The Beatles in this respect. This is not to say the likes of The Kinks, The Who, Cream and even The Stones (although this is does a dis-service to The Kinks and The Who) did not write great songs but they never achieved the musicality and originality of The Beatles. I must qualify this with The Who, who came much closer to The Beatles in these terms from 1969 onwards.
In musical and creative terms I firmly believe that british bands did not touch The Beatles until the likes of Yes, King Crimson and Emerson, Lake came to prominence.

Absolutely, mrmustard...it seemed to be the American bands that really had an upper hand. I'm glad you mention Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, because I agree with you that they were definitely on a similar creative level.

It will be the first time I have seen them live so I am really looking forward it. Hope they do almost cut my hair.
