OK, may be a contentious issue here.
Early photographs and movies of The Beatles confirm that they all smoked. Of course, back then in the late fifties and early sixties it was 'cool' to smoke and, at that point in time, there was a larger percentage of the population in Britain that were smokers as opposed to non smokers. The current trend, against the backdrop of increased awareness of lung cancer and related diseases attributed to smoking has reversed the smoking/non smoking statistics (ie, there are now more non smokers than smokers).
For the record, I don't smoke and never have. I haven't even tried. I think it's a disgusting habit and I welcome the measures taken by the Government to prohibit smoking in public places such as pubs, restaurants, cinemas, work places etc. Gone are the days when, after a night out in the local, my clothes used to stink of stale tobacco and my wife wouldn't allow me into bed without having a shower first!
Anyway, just out of curiosity, how many of you forum members actually smoke, when did you start (and why) and have you tried quitting (and why)?
And, by the way, I don't have anything against smokers per se. Some of my best friends are smokers and I don't hold it against them because of it.
Just thought I'd ask. Non smokers are welcome to join in this discussion too.

I too have never smoked (apart from some 'jazz cigarettes' on a visit ti Amsterdam - but then it's rude not to!).
I too find it disgusting, offensive and an infringement on peoples liberties who don't smoke who smoke blown in their faces. Smoking is a significant drain on NHS resources. It is one of the main causes of lung disease such as COPD which is in the top 5 causes of death according to the world health organisation.
Surely less people are smoking now since the 50's and 60's so the current trend would stand to reason.
So in my opinion people should not smoke and if you must do it in your own home or car with the windows closed so you only kill yourselves and not others!

I do smoke. Not regularly, but if I have a spare moment and some cigarettes on me (which is fairly rare) or if a friend is smoking me and offers one, or there are people smoking outside at a party, then I will gladly have one. I find it relaxing and often it is a good way to join together with strangers.
To people who challenge me smoking because "you're killing yourself!": if I cared about dying, I wouldn't smoke. I'm going to die anyway. How I die is up to me.

I'm a non-smoker as well. My family on my mother's side has undeniable problems with cigarettes. A large number of them have been smokers for years, and some have tried repeatedly to quit (with limited success, obviously!) My personal thoughts on it are that it is a really stupid habit to have - expensive AND damaging beyond belief to your physical state don't sound too great to me.
I personally know I will never pick up a cigarette. My uncle died of lung cancer because he smoked so much for so many years, and I'm sure I needn't bring up how many of our favorite musicians have died due to illnesses related to cigarette use.

Early photographs and movies of the Beatles do indeed confirm that they smoked.
It should be noted that the first wives of both Paul and Ringo died of cancer. And, of course, George died of cancer.
Non-smoker here. I went through a pack when I was 18, but found it disgusting and did not get hooked. I could not get the seratonin from it. Must be because I didn't inhale.
