Six degrees of separation (also referred to as the "Human Web") refers to the idea that, if a person is one step away from each person they know and two steps away from each person who is known by one of the people they know, then everyone is at most six degrees away from any other person on Earth.
Thus, in my case, I do have a friend who knows personally Paul McCartney. Also, a few years ago, shortly after George passed away, I met one of his closest friends. And finally, someone told me that she babysat George, while he was a toddler in Liverpool (although, I have honestly not been able to confirm that fact with anyone else). So, all in all, I can reasonnably say, that I am two (2) degrees of separation from The Beatles, right? How about you? Tell us a little about it!

I met Louise Harrison after a concert by her Beatle band Liverpool Legends over the summer. Louise is George's oldest and only sister. She's a lovely person, by the way, just as caring and sweet as anyone could possibly be. One degree. Do I win a prize?

One degree. Do I win a prize? Cool Alas, you win nothing. And everything. Personal stories are much more interesting than the poll results, as one can see, right?!? Be that as it may, in fact, in your case, that would mean two (2) degrees, because (if I stand correctly), just like me, you know someone (one degree) who knew George. Thus, if you would’ve knowned one of the fab personally, then you would’ve been able to state that you’re one degree (the closest possible).

I met Paul McCartney once and shook his hand! Does that count as one degree?

Well, if your grandpa went to school with Brian Epstein, one can reasonably assume that your grandpa must have known someone who knew Brian Epstein, right? And in that case – granted that you do have some recollection of your grandad – we are talking 4 degrees : YOU –> GRANDPA –> X –> BRIAN EPSTEIN…

I understand the mathematics now! I never was one for the numbers...Yes, I agree that the personal stories are valuable. It was incredible to meet Louise. I was also able to talk with a man named Marty, who portrays George in Louise's band. He's met Paul McCartney. I went to Louise's band's concert with my mom, dad, and sister and we got to sit in the front row (which I was completely excited about!) and dance and sing along. Marty tossed a guitar pick to my sister during the show, and just for fun, we fangirled a little for them! The guys on stage thought it was hysterical, and Kevin and Bob (John and Paul respectively) both made comments about it after the show when we got to meet them. Anyway, Marty was just about my favorite person in the world when all was said and done. We had a lovely conversation, and just before he had to go and talk to some other people, he slipped a guitar pick into my hand! He is super sweet, and the band was incredible.

Great story But... "fangirled"? What's that then ? Weeeeell...You know all of those millions of girls squealing and reaching out toward the stage? That's fangirling! (we did it on a much smaller scale, though, I think that would've scared someone silly if we'd screamed that loud )

My uncle is Eric Clapton's manager, so that counts I guess If your uncle is EC manager, then one can possibly assume that your uncle knows (or have known) one of the Beatles, right? So, daveandmike you might be something like two (2) degrees (You -> Uncle -> Beatles), but undoubtedly three (3) (You-> Uncle -> ”X” -> Beatle)

It was incredible to meet Louise. Out of topic, but if I am not mistaken, Louise wrote a book about her bro George and the Beatles years, right? Anyone read it?

Daveandmike's uncle is Clapton's manager. The fact that Clapton is still performing suggests that his uncle may not have been his manager in those heady days of the sixties/early seventies and even if he was, there's no guarantee that he knew, or knows one of the Beatles. My mate from Runcorn was delivered by Paul's mother when she was a midwife in the fifties! I don't expect that would count as any degree of separation? Right?

OK, then as I previously suggested, it is three (3) degrees of separation for Daveandmike. You see, Eric Clapton was undoubtedly close to the Beatles in the 60’s, right? And if his uncle was not EC’s manager during the sixites and seventies, then : Daveandmike -> Uncle -> Clapton -> Beatles)… Now, let’s see what your case offers If Paul’s mother delivered your friend in the fifties (and I do assume that your friend had no connection with Paul’s mother afterwards, right?), we can however reasonably take for granted that there was some kind of connection between your friends mum and Paul’s mother, right? Thus, assuming that you know or have known your friend’s mother, that means You -> Mother’s Friend –> Paul’s Mother -> Beatles… three (3) degrees of separation. In the case you never had any connection with your friend’s mother, then it means four (4)…

Actually he was his manager in the 60's and the 70's. He's the one who got Eric into rehab. Though I've never actually met him...
