Have just watched this - again! Good film and it gives a basic background to the whole Stuart Sutcliffe but it really annoys me how they throw in things just to please the masses. For explain 'John' saying hard days night, and giving 'Ringo' a brief appearence!
Whats everyone elses opinion on the film? (sorry if this thread been done before :S)

I loved the film - the music too! Ian Hart made a very good John Lennon... on more than one occassion in fact ("Life and Times"). I actually won my video copy of Backbeat in a competition in the old Beatle Monthly book - they even printed my name, which was SO cool! LOL

"Hangin's too good to it!" Love the film. I went to the Liverpool premiere at the old Odean Cinema on London Road, where premieres of A Hard Day's Night and Help! were shown and the Beatles themselves appeared. It's sadly closed now, given way for a brand new Odean at the superb Liverpool ONE complex. Last I heared the old cinema was going to be converted into a hotel. Afterwards I blagged my way into a private party (nothing has changed!) and met Allan Williams for the first time, he was very uspet that he was not mentioned in the film and would not sign a Backbeat flyer I had as he did not want to endorse the film in his disgust. He did however, later sign the back of my cinema ticket stub

i liking the idea of the old odean being a hotel! Yeah, don't know how they will do that - they will have to put some windows in the rather ugly brickwork for a start, but I hope they preserve it in some way and the building finds new life.

yeah totally agree, would be horrible if they knock it down, or even just leave it to rot. plus i think the hotel idea is better than making it into flats.

Used to worship that film, but, i don't know i guess the more i've learnt, the more the inaccuracies and some of the characterisations annoy me. Plus the throwing in of later Beatle lyrics like the one Sprucy mentioned plus Stu saying about working "eight days a week" is frustrating.
Like Al i won some Backbeat merch - the Citizen (local paper in my home town) when the video came out had a competition to win a video promo poster fully framed and signed by Astrid! Still hangs on my bedroom wall at my parents.

How do we know for sure that these phrases were not used at the time? It's no more corny than say 'Across The Universe': "Where did she come from?" "She came in through the bathroom window"

I loved the film (collected merchandise and everything) and there's still a lot I love about it. I like the overall visuals of the film and the sense of cameraderie and tension between the band. Really loved the performance scenes and still regularly listen to the soundtrack which I thought was awesome. But I find the film difficult to watch now mostly because the romance between Astrid and Stuart doesn't work for me - actually it makes my skin crawl and I have no idea why. Though this isn't that uncommon with me (actually the skin crawling) - I'm often entirely uninvested in the central romance of a story and depending how much of the emotional story revolves around that it can ruin a story for me. For example, I'm also entirely bored by the Jude/Lucy relationship in Across the Universe and I can happily miss the last 20 minutes of Rent. Obviously I am a bit weird. Plus the throwing in of later Beatle lyrics like the one Sprucy mentioned plus Stu saying about working "eight days a week" is frustrating. How do we know for sure that these phrases were not used at the time? It's no more corny than say 'Across The Universe': "Where did she come from?" "She came in through the bathroom window" Actually this also bugs the hell out of me in Across the Universe. Though I'd be more willing to give them the benefit of the doubt as the characters in ATU loosely exist in a world where the Beatles music and lyrics have saturated everything - it's a bit like Shakespeare - we quote him all the time mostly without even realising it. Though I don't think the film actually does it that way or particularly well (too much set up for too little pay off). With the quotes in Backbeat though, particularly Hard Day's Night and Eight Days A Week - which are the two that stuck in my head - The Beatles have already attested they were Ringo-isms, not heard by them at least before, and we know the circumstances they were said under. For a film that's vaguely supposed to be historical, it seems odd to go against established fact just for... ummm, actually I'm not sure - to give Beatle fans a thrill of recognition, maybe? Ah, getting tired again - might post my thoughts about Across the Universe tomorrow.

I thought Across the Universe was terrible! Full of corny stuff, as mentioned above - and did no one else notice the ridiculous amount of autotune ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autotune) on ALL the vocals? It was almost like Stephen Hawking sings The Beatles! Don't even get me started on Bono!

Obviously I am a bit weird. Nope. Deep and thoughtful, I like it

I really like the film, very good performances all round especially from Ian Hart.
I met Chris O'Neill, who played George, on a cruise ship a few years ago when he was playing with his tribute band the Backbeat Beatles. A very cool guy.
