I think john has the best voice How 'bout you guys? Hi Andy and welcome to the forum. Although I think George is a great singer who sings with passion and belief, in terms of technical ability and power it has to come down to either John or Paul. In Roy Carr and Tony Tylers, must have, The Beatles: An illustrated Record, they cite John as being 'by far the most gifted vocalist of the group' with his performance on I'm So Tired. However Paul is clearly a master of all stylings. His version of Long Tall Sally is seminal and he totally makes it his own and the listener forgets Little Richard ever existed as with Kansas City also. The vocal on May Be I'm Amazed should make any singer completely envious. She's Leaving Home is just the perfect example of how a beautiful ballad should be sung. Lennon just knocks you out with the raw power, confidence and originality in his voice. He draws you in on every song whether it's a song like All I Go To Do or Yer Blues. I think it's impossible to say who is the better singer. It comes down to personal preference as, in some ways, they were very similar anyway. If you really pushed me on pain of death I would have to say John on the basis of a more unique voice. Further to this discussion, what makes me annoyed is that if you ask anyone in street who they thought the best lead singer is they would not very likely say Lennon or McCartney. They would most likely say Robert Plant, Mick Jagger, Roger Daltrey, Steven Tyler, Freddie Mercury, Tony Hadley for example. They are all great singers but for me Lennon and McCartney are just as good and in most cases better than all of these guys and they do get forgotten as lead singers sometimes basically because they are known to play an instrument when they sing.

I think Paul probably has the best voice in the traditional sense, but my favorite voice is George's. I love his near-whisper vocals on "Long, Long, Long" and his harmony vocals with John on "You've Really Got a Hold on Me".

Probably Paul. I've always liked tenors anyway (I'm a baritone myself).
John was always self-conscious of his own voice. It had a certain naso-dental coloration to it, and he was always trying to disguise it somehow, either by speeding up the tape, slowing it down, and eventually resorting to a Heartbreak Hotel echo.
But I think the reason we LIKE John's voice is that we associate the sound of it with some really great songs. That's what it is, isn't it?

But I think the reason we LIKE John's voice is that we associate the sound of it with some really great songs. That's what it is, isn't it? I'm afraid I have to disagree with you there Henry. Yes, John did have times in his life when he was self conscious about his voice but how do you get over the fact that if he was that self conscious he thought his best playing/singing was before the Beatles made it big when he couldn't disguise his voice at all, in the Liverpool and Hamburg clubs? John had an honesty and passion to his voice that very few singers could ever equate to. If you want to talk technically then examples of this would be dynamics he could create in songs like I'm So Tired. Sheer power like Money(Barrett Strong got nowhere near this in his version) and Yer Blues. Then there is his softer side like Julia and If I Fell. So to say 'the reason we LIKE John's voice is that we associate the sound of it with some really great songs' is , quite frankly, putting down one of the greatest singers of the 20th century with complete naivety of what he did contribute as a vocalist to the musical world.

Love John's voice. It's so unique and gives me shivers. Especially "You Really Got a Hold On Me", "Strawberry Fields Forever" and "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away".
But Paul is AMAZING too. So versatile. How he could record "Yesterday" in the same session as "I'm Down" I'll never know. It's partly due to Paul that every song of theirs sounds different. I love his voice on "Got to Get You Into My Life" and "Ticket to Ride".

mrmustard, I absolutely agree. John's voice is indeed associated with some of the greater songs of our time, but this is not why we love John's vocals. The main reason for me? John Lennon has one of the most recognizable and unique voices I have ever heard. It's so unmistakably John, and I'm sure any one of us could pick out his voice from a whole choir of people because he's so, well, John.
Another reason that I love John's voice is because of the many different qualities it can possess. Things like "Strawberry Fields Forever" feature a John whose voice is positively haunting, and I swear every time I hear "A Day in the Life" a shiver runs down my spine. Then there are songs like "Twist and Shout" and "Help!" that seem to be sheer energy; in songs like these, John is a rocker, 110%. There are songs in which John shows a more vulnerable facet to his voice, like, one of my personal favorites, "Julia." My favorites, however, are the songs when John is just plain mischievous. "Dig a Pony," "Dig It," and "Girl" are only a few of John's more witty and playful pieces.
I cannot think of another voice that is quite as unique as John's, and the fact that he shows us the many sides to his personality through his music is an incredible thing. What an experience it is to listen to John's voice and know that.

I See Paul As A More All Rounder And He Has A Very Strong Voice,Like George. I Doubt You Can Imagine George Belting Out Twist And Shout Or Dizzy Miss Lizzy,But Listen To The 'Yeah Yeah's At The End Of While My Guitar Gently Weeps And His Voice Is Almost As Strong As Pauls. Not Saying I Hate George,George Is My Favourite Beatle. But All In All,John Has The Best And Most Versitile Voice,For Me Anway. One Minute He Could Be Dislocating His Tonsils Singing Twist And Shout And Another Having A Soft Voice Almost Under His Voice In Across The Universe. There's Four Types Of Lennon Singing,And Probably More 1. 'My Voice Is Utterly Dead' Voice Heard In Twist And Shout,Dizzy Miss Lizzy,Revolution 9 And More 2. 'Psychadelic... ish' Voice Heard In Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds,Strawberry Fields Forever,A Day In The Life,Tommorrow Never Knows,She's Leaving Home,Across The Universe And More 3. 'Early Sixties' Voice From Me To You,I Wanna Hold You're Hand,A Hard Days Night,Help!,Wait And More 4. 'The John Lennon' Voice Norwegian Wood,Girl,And You Bird Can Sing, And More.
(And Thankyou To That Kind Soul Who Gave Me A Karma Point. No Idea Who It Was,But Thankyou Very Much.)

Its so hard to pick, I love their voices so much. John's is unique and amazing, and I have always loved it, especially in songs like "Mind Games".... However, I think my favorite if I have to choose is Paul's. His voice is so versitile, going from sweet songs like "I Will" to rauncy and loud like in "Oh! Darling" and "Helter Skelter". The song that seals the deal for me is "Here, There, and Everywhere". His voice is absolutly perfect in that song.
