As some of you might know the Gibson guitar John sometimes used back in the early days of the Beatles was a Gibson J160E (now that model is called the John Lennon model). He had it stolen at the Astoria, Finsbury Park, North London, and I was there watching the show that night!! but I hasten to add it was not me that pinched it.

Wow - what was that gig like?! John and George both had Gibson J160Es which they purchased from Rushworth's store in Liverpool - some say the guitars were competition prizes as there are pics of them being presented with the guitars, however there are purchase receipts in existence so they were paid for, despite the seemingly free publicity!.

The story goes that it was John's who was stolen, but he thought it was George's that was taken, so he continued to play the guitar he acted like was his but was really George's.

Wow - what was that gig like?! Well I had a few quid in those days, so I got two seat right near the stage so I was only a few feet from the Band. What was it like? hard to tell!!! there was constant screaming going on, the girls were expected to scream, and scream they did, non stop!! I was a bit peed off as was Vicky, I had parted with a sizeable wedge to hear the Band, and it was spoilt. Paul loved the screaming, and encouraged the girls, John hated it!! he made 'monkey faces' at the girls, and yelled at them to 'shut up'. George just stood there and had an 'I will just stand here and pick, you just do what you like' attitude. Ringo just played louder, it must have got them down at times trying to play above all the noise, but that's show business!!

The story goes that it was John's who was stolen, but he thought it was George's that was taken, so he continued to play the guitar he acted like was his but was really George's. That could well have been so, but on that night John played it on some songs, the rest he played his 'Ricky'. The modern Gibson 'John Lennon' J160E will set you back a fair few quid, but Epiphone do a very good one, but make sure if you want one to get an early Korean made one, the newer Chinese ones are crap.
