Was it ever played live?

No, not by the Beatles. I don't think even by Paul solo.

It's very similar to I'm Down, which is possibly why it was never considered for inclusion in their live act.

I love the backing vocals when they sing 'Ahh! The night before!' and the quirky guitar solo. It's also a song that hesitates betwen anger and sadness whereas I'm Down is all anger and Yesterday is all sadness. So all in all I love it.

I can see the similarities between Long Tall Sally and I'm Down. I prefer The Night Before too, but I believe I'm Down was specifically written to replace Long Tall Sally in their act. The Night Before is similar in tempo and with the keyboards of course.

Although a really good song (I would have been proud to have written it) it is one of the few times The Beatles consciously repeated an idea for another song. This is why it fails to match up to Long Tall Sally as with every record they made they tried to make it different from the last and do something new. I'm Down isn't.

Either which song we're talking about, I've never heard a version of both that lacked an impassioned vocal by Paul! Regards, Beatle Bob

I was more talking about song conception and structure.

One thing though, they obviously REALLY enjoyed playing it live - just check out the Shea Stadium footage.

They were laughing their heads off because John played organ on the recording and so he decided to play it live and by his own admission didn't have a clue what he was doing and completely ballsed it up. Now, may be if they had some serious rehearsals before the tour...................

Paul said he was trying to write another "one note song", like Long Tall Sally. He said ... "It's a lot harder than you'd think to do that!".

It's my all-time favourite clip of them playing live. How come? Is it because they are enjoying themselves so much due to the fact John is messing it up?

I'd always wondered if they were on drugs that night or not... where they?

How come? Is it because they are enjoying themselves so much due to the fact John is messing it up? Do I get the feeling you don't like this clip? It's my favourite because, despite how well John may or might have been playing, they were clearly having such a great time on stage. I find their enjoyment very infectious and it never fails to bring a smile to my face
