American Breed's version of Bend Me Shape Me is one of my favourite songs of all time. I love the garage feel - the growly vocals and the grunty horns. Brit bands didn't sound like this. I'd grown up with what sounds like now the rather twee and bouncy Amen Corner version (but their Paradise (is half as nice ) is maybe my number 2 favourite. Go figure) They were released in the same month. Any preferences over the two versions?(can someone bung in a link? ). I have generally a growing preference for american 60's music over the english. I always thought that english music had grabbed the reins in the 60's, but the more I listen the more I think the US never really let go. (except for that brief 64 Beatlemania era.)

I'll upload the two versions here, I have to admit I am not that familiar with The American Breed though - so it'll be interesting to compare. To a certain I extent I agree with your comments about US vs UK bands, except that I have found that you have to scratch the surface to find the REALLY good US tracks. US chart music at one point tended to be Mersey Clones (now there's a band name!!). However, I don't think you could ever say that the likes of The Who, The Small Faces and The Kinks didn't have that garagey feel. By the way, I bought 5 CDs of US Sixties Garage music the other day (arrived Monday!) - I was looking for another song to grab like "Have Love Will Travel" by The Sonics did. If I find any worthy tracks I'll put them up here!

Damn you and your cold logic - what happened to that dreamer I used to know? Agreed - Brit bands would come up with the big songs. I think it's more that I was brought up thinking US music died forever in 64.

Yeah, I blame the weather for my cold logic!

Having now listened to the two versions, of which American Breed's was the first released, I am quite amazed at how different they are - different lyrics and chords! They are both VERY good versions, but I think, with a few more plays, I could grow to love The American Breed's version more.
Judge for yourselves:

Funny how provincial we all are, thinking our experiences are the reference for the universe. I never knew there was another version besides the one apparently done by American Breed (I live on this side of the pond*). I like that one better, of course! The triplet drums are a big part of it. Though I have to say, Kevin, I don't think of it as a garage sound. Those words to me are for songs by the Troggs, The Romantics, and that ilk. * See what I mean? This side of the pond meaning closer to New York than London ...

Yeah, I know what you mean - I wasn't aware that American Breed did the original, I was only familiar with Amen Corner's version.
