I have never really understood American football (or just football if you are American). I appreciate you have to get the ball over the line but what are the differences between this and Rugby? When I watch American TV shows people seem to be getting very excited watching it but the ball hardly seems to have moved 10 yards in the previous 5 minutes!

Well, I'm American, and I don't understand it really. I pretty much look at it as a bunch of men in tight pants piling on top of each other. No offense to football fans. I get that it's exciting, but I just don't feel it myself. Ironically, my parents are at a Super Bowl party right now. If anything, football is an excuse to socialize, I guess?

AH well, shed the tear, the football season is over until September.
But my team won (Pittsburgh Steelers) and so all is sunny in Pepperland!
I don't know enough about Rugby to explain what the differences are, but I would imagine things are fairly similar?
I think I may be the only person who inhabits these Beatles forums AND the Steelers forums. "I'm so sad and lonely..."!

Would you mind pointing out the subtle differences then? Yes please, if it's not too much trouble.

In rugby you can only pass the ball backwards so any player in front of the ball is of no use since he can't participate in the game. You also have to put the ball over the line and on the gound to score points. If the ball doesn't touch the gound there is no point. They use video a lot to decide if the ball actually touched the ground.

"...what are the differences between this and Rugby? "
Don't know that much about rugby, but my understanding is that the BIG difference is "scrimmage." When a ball-carrier's knee hits the ground or he runs out of bounds, play stops. The ball is placed on the yard line where the play ended. The center "hikes" the ball through his legs to the quarterback on cue from the quarterback to resume the action. How long it takes to hike the ball will vary to set the defense off-balance, but there is a penalty for delay of game.
