There is no accompanying video or even a still picture of us. My two brothers and I had a garage-rock band 50 years ago, grew up, and left the nest.
In 1998, the middle brother (I’m the oldest) got the bright idea to jam on Beatle songs. This was on an occasion when our families got together for Christmas. Every year we would rotate hosting Christmas. In 1998 he got out his electric guitars (A Ric 360-12c63, a Gretsch Country Gentleman, and a Hofner bass, and we jammed on Beatle songs. The middle brother, a fierce Beatlemaniac, almost always had a collection of electric guitars, and almost always makes/models the Beatles played.
The next year, at the youngest brother’s house, we continued the tradition. By that time I had a Squier Strat and a small Vox amp which I carried with my family there. And we jammed on Beatle songs again.
We did that every year until 2018. That was the last year we did that. By that time, we had played through the playable songs and I had gravitated to playing a few numbers on my electronic keyboard. And by that time we had a pre-planned set list of songs with lead vocals assigned. We always looked forward to it. My youngest brother and I always wondered what Beatle guitar the middle brother would show up with.
One year he had a Gibson J-160e. We took a short break and he set it on a stand, still plugged in to an amp that was still turned on. We heard a sound (I am not making this up!) identical to the sound at the beginning of the Beatle record “I Feel Fine.” The thing was feeding back! We wound up playing the song. I don’t think we could have replicated that sound if we had tried.
We saw him with the Ric 325, Gretsch Country Gents, Tenneseans, and a Duo Jet, Epi Casinos (with and without finishes), and the best sounding one, a Gibson SG (such as George played when they recorded “Paperback Writer” and “Rain.”
Our last Beatlefest was in 2018. He had a red Les Paul like George had in 1968.
In March 2019 the middle brother had a massive stroke in the middle of the night and we lost him. There was no Beatlefest in 2019 and there won’t be one in 2020.
I made a folder on my computer with pictures and videos of our various Beatlefests over the years and put them on a thumb drive. I gave the thumb drive to my brother’s widow to download to her and her children’s computers.
We don’t have the Beatlefests anymore, but we do have the fond memories.
