I watched the Classic Album TV programme last night focusing on Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys. What struck me was the thought where they the natural rival for The Beatles and not the other UK groups. The Beach Boys and Brian Wilson were redefining song writing arrangements and the studio so were they in effect the closest rivals to The Beatles crown. Still cannot get over Pet Sounds being a flop on release. Also what was the record company thinking about the cover photo.

1. I think the idea was that the San Diego Zoo animals they were feeding were their "pets." 2. Brian Wilson is two days older than Paul McCartney. 3. Both groups were both on Capitol records in the US. I suspect Capitol thought that promoting Pet Sounds would be a waste of resources. 4. I think I am the only one who has noticed that the background vocals on "I'm Waiting for the Day," from the 1966 Pet Sounds album, sound a lot like the background vocals on the Beatles 1967 single "All You Need is Love." Except the Beach Boys are singing "Ahhh" and the Beatles are singing "love, love, love." (I might get flamed for this.)
