One of the most interesting famous guitars of the late 60's was Syd Barrett of Pink Floyd's 1962 Fender Esquire guitar. He had put shiny silver film on the body and added silver metal disks that he would buff to a shine before every performance to reflect the light from the shows out into the auidance. A couple of my friends have made nice replicas of this guitar. The sad thing was Syd accidently left the guitar out on his porch one night while it rained and all the disks rusted and he soon lost interest in the guitar and traded it for a new black telecaster which he later hated! No one knows where the guitar is today. View Attachment View AttachmentJust finished building a replica of Syd's 1962 Fender Esquire guitar. Syd with his Esquire

This will be an interesting build. Doing a replica of the Harrison Rocky Strat. After many, many years of wanting one! Just ordered the strat. Found it in Florida. It's on it's way. This strat will become.... This guitar George is holding... Here is the pickguard I did for it. It doesn't have to be perfect, just close enough.

My brother has had a couple of Rocky replicas. About a year or so ago he sent me a picture of his current one, except it was HSS (humbucker bridge pickup).
The strat is the most ergonomic musical instrument every designed. Of any kind of musical instrument.

OK A quick progress report on my Rocky build. I'm almost finished. I still have to paint the outer ring a light red. I have to resolder the jack plate wires and ground wire. Put the strings on her and tune it. I also have some strap buttons coming. They were missing on the guitar when I bought it. And then it should be finished.

Interesting that on all the Rocky Strats, the tone and volume knobs are mis-marked.

While with the Yardbirds, Jimmy Page used a Telecaster, given to him by Jeff Beck Jimmy decorated the guitar with silver discs, probably influenced by Syd Barrett He later painted a dragon design on this Tele.

IIRC when Jeff Beck was in the Yardbirds he played a Fender Esquire, which is a Telecaster with just one pickup, in the bridge position. With the "ashtray" on, you can't even tell the guitar even has a pickup.
I have heard that it not an urban legend that the Esquire has a better sound than the Telecaster, because it's lacking the neck pickup, in which the magnet pulls on the strings causing a slight resistance to vibrations.

Syd's Mirrored guitar was a '62 Esquire and Syd had the strings almost touching the pickup which would create a buzzing noise and feedback, but he liked it because that was the style music they were playing back then. This was also the time when pedals weren't in fashion, Jimi started that trend.

This Washburn bass can be played acoustically, with rubber strings, which are kept smooth with talc... Guy Pratt was given one, and tells a funny story of arriving back to Heathrow with it, and being recognised by a Customs Officer, who was a Pink Floyd fan, but unhappy because he hadn't been able to get tickets for the forthcoming concert. He asked Guy to open up his music case, and immediately fished out a large Ziplock bag of white powder. Guy told him he wasn't even going to explain what the talc was for, just test it.
