That was She Loves You, released on Swan Records in September 1963. It eventually peaked at #1.

As far as I know, the previous released songs did not chart.

I have a guess. I recall that 'Please Please Me' actually listed on a Chicago radio station (WLS?). The station's Director knew the Swan Record exec. So somewhere in the summer of 1963 it listed on that station's singles list. Lower thirties (only listed to 40) if I recall the story.

Fan alaskan is getting closer in TIME to the right answer, but really the answer is something very different than what has been brought up so far.
It blew me away for sure when I read it!

My Bonnie was released on January 27, 1964. That is later than the release of She Loves You.

My Bonnie was released on January 27, 1964. That is later than the release of She Loves You. I know that, but I'm guessing this is a trick question. If it's a radio station chart then presumably it doesn't have to be a single, or even be officially released.

From Me To You by Del Shannon? July 1st 1963. It made number 77. Zipp, you are the MAN! www.rockhall.com/inductee/del-shannonApparently he played the Royal Albert Hall with the Beatles in 1963. Liked what he heard, and recorded his version within 2 weeks (in England, I believe), released it in the States in June 1963. I would LOVE to hear that version ! , I haven't found it while scouring the web. In a turn-about-is-fair-play type of thing, he wrote "Needles and Pins" for Peter and Gordon, Peter being the brother of Paul's girlfriend Jane Asher. All this is found in multiple sites on the web, so I am ASSUMING it is true. Del Shannon's story is truly amazing ... very Beatle like in many ways. Consider his road trip from Michigan to NYC to record their first hit ("Runaway" - one of the best rock and roll songs ever, IMHO!), in the middle of winter in a car so beat up you could see the highway through the floor! Remind anyone of a certain van ride down the M1 (?) one New Year's Day on the way to Decca studios? Del Shannon was also way ahead of his time, being one of the first rock and rollers (white) to pen his own music and not be presented as a prefabricated package - he was what he was. He was in line to be one of the Traveling Wilbury's, after Roy Orbison died, but sadly took his own life with a firearm, succumbing to a lifetime of depression and substance abuse. P.S. Do you Brits remember a tune of his called "Little Town Flirt"? Apparently it did better over there than back in the States! Holy Cow ... I just read that Del Shannon produced "Baby It's You", as recorded by Smith! For those that haven't heard that, it's a version that is great, I think it rivals (or exceeds? Blasphemy!!) John's/The Beatles excellent version. I've loved the Smith recording forever, am really digging Del Shannon (we play Runaway in my cover band, what an awesome organ part), and now there's a connection ... the universe is wonderful!!

Well, I didn't know Del was going to join the Wilburies. At least this explains why they do a version of Runaway which is in the box set. But even the Wilburies come nowhere near the original which is an all time classic.

Ah! It was a bit of a trick as it was not a Beatles release!

I plead not guilty - Question didn't say Beatles release, just Lennon-McCartney single But the main thing is that I had NO IDEA that anyone else charted with a Lennon-McCartney song in the States before the Beatles themselves did. Wouldn't have guessed that in a million years!

I would LOVE to hear that version ! , I haven't found it while scouring the web. Just for you... "From Me To You" by Del Shannon Floorboard AWESOME, thanks TheEnd Interesting to note what he chose to not double up in terms of harmonies - he only harmonized on the "From Me, To You" bit, didn't do the verse ("...You Want", "... I Can Do!", etc.), or most significantly, he didn't harmonize on the middle eight (the bit that really makes the song, for me). Not as significant probably, but still interesting ... looks like he didn't feel that ending with that minor chord is what the Midwest audience was ready for in those days! Thanks again, TheEnd - incredible find/post!!

Nope T.E. In fact green had already been proposed. The right answer is...PURPLE! Heinz Edelmann wanted this colour but his assistant and cartoon advisor, Millicant McMillan, told him that purple would mean all kinds of problems with background colours etc. She suggested blue and he accepted. Since then Edelmann himself has had a slight memory lapse and thinks he asked for RED (implying a political angle) but McMilllan is adamant he asked for purple. Since nobody suggested red or purple I didn't have to make any difficult decisions over the answer.
