Let's have a talk about The Beatles recording Thank You Girl from March 5 1963 to the harmonica recording on March 13, 1963.

Well, on March 5 1963, The Beatles recorded this song from Take 1 to Take 6. On March 13 1963, they recorded the harmonica from Take 7 to Take 13. The harmonica recording were also used from Take 14 to Take 30. Finally the song was completed and made with mono and stereo mixes. So what do you think?

There are some great outtakes from these sessions as they experiment with the end edit piece. Some interesting studio chat too.

I have to say that I really liked the song so much more after hearing it live (Anthology?), the intro was so powerful on stage!
The studio version seemed kind of watered down, and John's reedy/breathy harmonica didn't help much in that regard.
Can someone maybe post a link to some of the studio banter that Michelle Revolution was talking about?
Thanks!

Do you think I'll make a stereo version with mono version on left channel from Past Masters Volume 1 and BBC version from Live at the BBC on right channel?

Do you think I'll make a stereo version with mono version on left channel from Past Masters Volume 1 and BBC version from Live at the BBC on right channel? I think it will be VERY difficult as the tempos will differ.

Okay. Maybe that's not a good idea, but do you know that this Beatles song was recorded at the BBC which is from The Beatles' Live at the BBC CD?

The live version is indeed on the Beatles Live At The BBC CD. Here's a stereo version for you! This is the US stereo version from the imaginatively titled "Beatles' Second Album" - notice any differences between this and the UK version (apart from being in stereo of course!)? Hey, Thanks Al, that was great. It's the version I grew up with, so it's kind of hard without an a/b comparison to say what's different, except lot's more reverb on this than the "Past Masters Vol I" I believe.
Was there another difference, like an extra verse, or something?
Thanks!

There are more harmonica flourishes on the US version - listen after the line "Thank you girl for loving me the way that you do..." And also at the very end of the track.

I thought it might be something like that.
It's really odd, I haven't heard that version in decades, but it was the first one I heard, and for years. So despite the changes, it sounds so right!

Thank You Girl is one of only a few tracks never released in stereo in the UK.

Thank You Girl was released in the UK, but as the B-side of From Me To You. Its first appearance on a UK LP was on the release of The Beatles Rarities, again in mono.
I must admit, I'm no expert on foreign releases - can anyone else help?

That's because it's only released on The Beatles' Second Album in the USA. Do you think that the stereo mix on Thank You Girl is also released on Beatles Beat in Germany and Conozca A The Beatles! in Mexico? I doubt it. It's been along time since I listened to any Beatles vinyl, but when I was a kid in the seventies The Beatles' Second Album was known as the only place a true stereo version of "Thank You Girl" had ever been released, and there under a heap of reverb and other assorted electronic muck bad enough to make you think it was really fake stereo again after all. If a cleaner stereo take had been released somewhere else, it probably would have been known to collectors. Purple Chick uses the Second Album take.
