Wow. Nice one. Well we're up to three pages now! Here's a bonus one sided single included in the McCartney II album. It says Paul McCartney but it's actually Wings in '79.

In the back of Macca's mind, he pretended Wings was an actual band but in reality it never was, was it. It was the McCartneys and supporting cast. Once in a while he'd throw Denny a bone or Jimmy or Joe but it was a token contribution. It was NEVER a band of equals. Maybe they just couldn't create as brilliantly as Macca in songwriting but I'm sure that all those albums could have been just McCartney solo albums. Thoughts?

(WoW, Linda looks ill to me that pic.) That's what I always thought too Amadeus, that they were just Paul's backing band with a name. I also think he was in a hurry to get a band name together to compete with John's Plastic Ono Band.
*Also I want to add something here that I found while looking for something else. If anyone has the First edition of the 'Blackbird' book, I won't even give the author his due and mention his name, but there is a pic that Scotland Yard took of Jimmy McCulloch when they found him. It was removed in later editions.

I believe that it was probably a relief when he dropped that band idea and started using his own name in '80 which he might have wished he had done all along.

It was removed in later editions. I read that book when it was brand new (I think). I got it from the library. I don't recall that pic. But that author had such fantastical stories in there that REALLY made McCartney out to be a perpetual bastard and drove Jimmy nearly homicidal. I've never heard that anywhere else. I wouldn't have wanted to be in a band with Macca but I'm sure there were enough good times that Macca wasn't a complete Pol Pot. Hmm?

I have the Gulliano book with that photo of Jimmy in. Very macabre. It's sad that photo was put in the public domain for all to see. It must have been very distressing for his family.

I have a CD of greatest hits from Wings. Unfortunately, the booklet is in tatters, but the CD still plays.

Totally. “Almost" Every album "pretty well" had a new drummer or lead guitarist. Denny is the only one who’s stuck. I’m sure he told them exactly what to play, like it or lump it. Understandable since most of them (other than Denny) were studio musicians. Not including Linda... Ha-ha That’s my opinion

Maybe they just couldn't create as brilliantly as Macca in songwriting but I'm sure that all those albums could have been just McCartney solo albums. Thoughts? Definitely the case. The structure of the live band hasn't changed to this day. Always a mainstay guitarist with someone else who can play bass while Paul plays piano. One other observation is that throughout all the Wings line ups he never touched an electric guitar/played lead live on stage. Whereas now he will play electric guitar quite frequently. Personally I wish he'd stick to bass, piano and acoustic and leave the electric guitars to the hired help. This leads me onto another point. All the guitar players in Wings were exceptional; McCullough, McCulloch and Juber. I even like Robbie Macintosh a lot. However this line up he's had has been by far longest lasting. Personally I feel the two guitar players have well out stayed their welcome. Rusty, for me, is nowhere near the calibre of McCullough, McCulloch, Juber and Macintosh. Sorry, just had to get that off my chest!!!

Four things:
1. The reason I couldn't really get into this thread when it first popped up was that, indeed, it's hard to tell a Wings album from a McCartney solo album.
2. What year was that picture with the sickly looking Linda taken? I hope it was AFTER James was born. She looks like one of those anorexic twins that used to appear on Maury Povich's talk show. Or a POW.
3. Oh, I think Rusty is quite adequate, MrMustard. In a Look magazine article in 1964, someone asked John Lennon if he thought the Beatles were good musicians. He said "We're adequate."
4. Haven't read the Blackbird book. It sounds like McCartney was acting the way he did in the Let It Be movie, driving George out of the band temporarily.

I think Rusty is more than adequate Henry J. I just see the others I mentioned as more distinctive guitar players.

It's sometimes not even called 'Wings'. I've seen people call them 'Paul McCartney & Wings', or just plain 'Paul McCartney'.

But I see it from a Wings fan view and not a Beatles fan view . At the time I got into Wings I really had no idea that McCartney was as so called dictator and that it was "his" band Obviously he wrote all the songs etc etc , I really looked at the members of the band as equals and of course you always fav the singer . My band was Wings . Not McCartney and some other musicians . As for total control what about At The Speed Of Sound ? Robert Plant sings on every Zep song , would anyone here would liked to hear Bonzo or John Paul sing to just point out that Zep was not just a Page /Plant band .? It may say on some Albums Paul McCartney and Wings . Me , I always say Wings . I read book Blackbird Seemed to me just a good way to print dirt to make money . Who would want to see photo`s of dead Musicians you grew up admiring ? The not so good looking Linda is more than likely the after effect of herbal ciggs and that bottle being passed around . The photo is 73 I guess as the card Linda is holding is the "Fat Man" that was used to promote the Summer UK Tour .

Like a lot of kids my age, I heard Wings before I heard The Beatles. "You mean Paul McCartney was in a band before Wings?"
I always thought it was too bad that Back To The Egg lineup imploded because of the Japan bust. I think that lineup was the most proficient in a technical way. And really, most of the songs on that one were NOT that bad. I play that one regular like.

Yes Wings line up`s did`nt last long which was a shame , I was always gutted I did`nt see the classic line up of Jimmy McCullough and Joe English . If my memory serves me well Joe English was homesick so that`s the reason he left the band . Jimmy of course was on the slippery slope of Drugs Henry McCullough and Seiwell must have really been kicking themselves when they left with the success of Band On The Run . McCartney was shocked by the way they left as it was such short notice he could`nt replace them . And with Juber and Holly again missing out on maybe another successful World Tour with no fault of their own . So this thing about Macca being a dictator does`nt really wash with me . You gotta be pretty stupid not to think that your career playing with McCartney was`nt going to be successful .

Give Ireland Back To The Irish / Give Ireland Back To The Irish . 25th Feb .1972 . Wings first single Banned by the BBC . Linda McCartney . "The ban disturbs me, the act of banning it is a much stronger political act than the contents of the record itself It`s just one man`s opinion ."
I even had trouble buying the single 3 years after it`s release !

What was offensive about Give Ireland Back To The Irish? Bloody Sunday was more offensive. John's song was better (not Sunday Bloody Sunday) but Paul's song was quite catchy too. Great Britain spent centuries doing what the U.S. are doing now; making the world British. (or American).
But whatever, that's a whole other too heavy discussion to get into on such a nice family friendly thread about WINGS.
..........
I've been listening to some b-sides I never caught for the first time now. Country Dreamer. Huh! Ringo is not the only one who could do convincing C&W.

The BBC represent the establishment/the government more so back then than now. This was a statement against the British government and this was the only way they could respond. You're right, Bloody Sunday was infinitely more offensive than a song that was a statement of fact. Freedom of speech? Democratic society? Bollocks!
