Was Wings a fully bonafide group or just a vehicle for Paul's songs? As a live act they where the real deal. In the studio, where they really just session players? He certainly produced his best and most consistent work with The Beatles. Songs like Maybe I'm Amazed and Here Today proved he needed no one at times.
Other than some promising songwriting with Elvis Costello, Paul seems to create alone. That's what the songwriting credits reflect anyway.

Here is a topic to discuss. Does Paul produce his best work in a group situation. Of course Macca produced his finest with The Beatles But I think his best stuff is when he was something to prove And sadly I think after Band On the Run he seemed to take his foot off the pedal Then through the terrible 80`s in which Macca seemed to just go through the motions and I thought that he would just release nice Radio 2 songs just to keep his bank balance ticking over . I thought he was heading to a almost in Cliff Richard mode . But then finally he came good with Flowers In the Dirt and maybe having Elvis Costello in the fold helped him get out of the easy chair song writing and come up with his best album since Back To The Egg After The Beatles Macca has never really had anyone (close and respected band members) to tell him that his stuff is bad and should write something that is`nt just a easy catchy tune that will be a Radio 2 play lister on a Sunday morning while your washing your car . I guess when you`ve had over 50 years in a Music career there are going to be ups and downs and I know I should be thankful of every album Macca releases , but I do think that sometimes less is more . Just put on London Town .

Mr. Kite, I think we can agree that what made to '80s so terrible was Paul's not having John to impress or one-up.

I had a very honest chat with Trev at the Beatle Forum meet up about Macca and I told him how these days I find it very hard to listen to any of McCartney`s new stuff over the years . We both agreed though that Macca has become almost a charicature of himself . I think the thing with me is that a got old and cynical when it came to Macca`s later years When at the end of the 70`s I was getting into more " Adult rock " with the likes of Pink Floyd`s The Wall The Who`s Quadrophenia and even Lennon`s Plastic Ono Band album . Then when I was putting on London Town it was`nt really tuning in into my Late teenage angst like growing my hair going to festivals and drinking pints from my cowboy boots* * I did it as a bet . At the Hyde Town Hall Battle Of the bands 1979 .

I think Paul had flashes of brilliance after the Wings era. Coming Up is I still believe a great pop track; his work with Elvis Costello was interesting Tug of War and Pipes of Peace influenced James Dean Bradfield of the Manic's but the only thing I can think of is Paul is a very classical songwriter. Bowie and Scott Walker seemed to relish deconstructing song writing and yet Paul is was as knowledgably on aspects of the art scene as those artists. I wonder if the kicking John got had an influe3nce on his output.

Paul needed John. John was the only person on earth who was Paul's equal. The only person he felt he might need to impress. There was NO way Denny Laine could hope to have that amount of influence on Paul's music. Any one since the Beatles ended who would say Paul's new record was crap or pretty average at best was more likely than not to send Macca into a right strop. And it's too bad because Ram and Band On The Run proved that he had a great handle on producing awesome music and great lyrics. I love the lyrics on Ram. And the flashes of brilliance since then proved that he still had the ability but not really any quality control. Take the best songs from Venus and Mars on through to London Town and you can make a truly amazing McCartney LP. Because it is a pain in the ass to keep getting up to lift the needle to skip that bloody 'Girlfriend' song. Pardon my flemmish.

Here is a topic to discuss. Does Paul produce his best work in a group situation. I'd say yes...and his finest work in a specific group that included a certain guy named John Lennon looking him in the eye As mentioned earlier, I agree John was the only person Paul would consider a true songwriting equal and we all reaped the benefits of the healthy competition between them. That said, Paul could also write perfect pop songs on his solo albums, but those albums were more hit or miss for me. I do wonder though how much of Wings output we should really consider a group situation? Looking at the songwriting credits on the Wings albums, Paul & Linda are credited with about 90% of the songs on their own (though London Town is unusual in that it does show Denny Laine getting co-writing credits on 5 songs). Do we actually know how much Linda really contributed to the Wings writing process? Was she an active participant or more of a sounding board for Paul to bounce ideas off? So even though Wings was a group it's hard to imagine Denny Laine or anyone telling the boss his new song wasn't up to snuff or he needed to rewrite the chorus Even after saying all that, I still love Paul's 1st solo album and Chaos & Creation in the Garden better than any Wings album so go figure
