Could this possibly be Rory Storm with Ringo?
Hi all,
Long time lurker, first time poster. Could a Holy Grail of Beatle rarities have slipped out a few years ago?
Rory Storm and the Hurricanes had 11 official drummers:
Ringo (May '59 - 18th Aug '62)
Derek Fell (mid? Dec '61 - 2? Jan '62)
Tony Ashdown (18th Aug '62 - 31st Aug '62)
Gibson Kemp (1st Sep '62 - Jan '63)
Deni (Feb '63)
Brian Johnson (Feb '63 - May '63)
Keith Hartley (May '63 - Nov '63)
Ian Broad (Nov 63)
Trevor Morais (Nov 63 - Feb 64)
Jimmy Tushingham (Feb 64 - Apr 67)
Carl Rich (Apr 67 - May 67)
And an all important guest drummer who we'll discuss in a minute.
Don Singleton (Mar '60)
Now, although Ringo was with the band solidly from May 1959 to August 62 (barring a short season playing for Tony Sheridan in Hamburg when he was replaced by Derek Fell) he wasn't present - due to flu - in early March when the Hurricanes were recorded at Crosby's Jive Hive Club.
Instead we have Hurricanes Drummer #1 - Don Singleton. He was a stand in, and he wasn't great.
The next recorded Hurricanes drummer was Brian Johnson. Brian joined the band in February '63 and left in May. He is featured on Dr. Feelgood, I Can Tell and Beautiful Dreamer recorded for Oriole on 8th May '63.
The third recorded Hurricanes drummer is Keith Hartley. Keith joined after Brian left and remained with the band 'til November '63. He plays on I Can Tell recorded at the Cavern on 18th June.
Three drummers later came Jimmy Tushingham in February '64. Jimmy stayed 'til April '67 which means that he drummed on the 30th September '64 recording session that spawned 'America' and 'Since You Broke My Heart'.
Now, a few years ago, a new Hurricanes recording came to life. Released on the "Unearthed Merseybeat" CDs released on Liverpool's own Viper Label came this recording of "Lend Me Your Comb" from, apparently, 1965. Hence it would also feature Jimmy Tushingham. Does it sound like him?
To my ears the song sounds too rough and ready to be recorded as late as '65, and anyway, why would they be demo-ing a song this old a full year after the professional recording they did of America?
Could it be possible that this, in fact, an older recording? I've seen it bandied about as being from 1962. Could it be Ringo?
Here's Ringo playing it at the Star Club in December 1962 with the Beatles for comparison, and again in 1963 for BBC radio.
Would love to hear your thoughts!
