It has taken me 4 days to come down from the euphoria that was Beatleweek 2008 during which time some home truths about The End (Al) have emerged and will be divulged in this thread!
Firstly, in agreement with Al about having a meet up for board members at The Cavern Pub at 11:00 am on the Saturday morning, my brother (Ringa) and good self attended said hostelry at the appointed time. Where was Al? Where was anybody?! .
Home truth #1 - Al, apparently. was still in bed suffering from excessive merriment the night before that allegedly went on until the early hours of Saturday morning . We eventually caught up with the big man and Nowhere Man (Rob) later that day in The Cavern Pub after seeing some awesome performances either in The Cavern Club or The Cavern Pub by bands such as G-Pluck Beatles (the find of Beatleweek 2008), Cavern Beat, Get Back Band (astonishing), Beatlemaniacs and Johnny Silver. Ringa and yours truly, after a healthy kebab got back to our hotel in the early hours already suffering from 'Liverpool throat' after singing at the tops of our voices virtually all day.
Sunday morning saw us at The Adelphi where (surprisingly enough) Al and Rob turned up for the midday performance in Fridays Bar from 4! Argentina who were absolutely superb. Mind you, Al and Rob looked a bit rough but Rob looked very fetching in his Beatle wig! (I kid you not). My brother and I went to the American Bar at 1:00 pm to see Marcus who, to me was rather special and very enjoyable. At the end of his set, he became very emotional when explaining that, at the age of 5 he fell in love with John Lennon and by the time he was 10, John was dead . It was a very poignant moment.
Back at Fridays Bar we saw the G-Pluck Beatles, The Blackbirds, Del Betales ; home truth #2 - Al is Norwegian - no, honestly! . I'll let Al explain that one , and Tony & The Hotdogs who had a 16 year old drummer that had us astounded, both Al and I glanced at each other and, in unison, exclaimed "****ing hell" ! The boy was exceptional, basing himself obviously on Keith Moon.
Home truth #3 - Al, at that stage, couldn't take the pace and I'm sure he went back to bed for a few hours . Anyway, my brother and I stayed in The Adelphi for the rest of the day, seeing Instant Karma, All You Need Is Love, Cavern Beat and The Blue Meanies (awesome). Much ale was inbibed that day and we eventually found our hotel and slept soundly. We never saw Al or Rob again for the remaining days of Beatleweek.
Bank Holiday Monday saw us with our obligatory 12 packs of beer for the outdoor stage at Derby Square commencing at 11:00 am (after having a couple of swift ones in a nearby hostelry!). Normally, I'm not too fond of The Clube Big Beatles (Brazil) but they had with them a full orchestra which was a police military band and the performance was exceptional. They were followed by All You Need Is Love, The Blue Meanies, The Merseybeatles and Badfinger at which time we left for The Cavern Pub where we saw The G-Pluck beatles again, The Repeatles, The Blackbirds, Banned On The Run and The Norwegian Beatles (did I mention that Al was Norwegian? )
That was the end of our Beatleweek as we were travelling back North the next day but we both agreed that it had been the best Beatleweek we'd had. We met lots of really nice people and it was great to meet Al & Rob.
Roll on next year and I'll leave you with home truth #4 - I bet you all think that Al got his board name from the track on the Abbey Road album? Think again! Well, Ringa and I know the inspiration behind 'The End' but we're not going to say anything, are we Al? Maybe Al can have a competiton to see if anyone can guess where he really got his board name from?
By the way Al, you look really really cool at The Indonesian Embassy. I didn't know you played left handed bass? . And where was your leather jacket?
Tremendous.
