-- BACKGROUND --
• Eric's was opposite The Cavern and was open late 70's / early 80's
• The club was founded by three men, one of which, Ken Kesti, who is credited as being Queen's first manger. Freddie Mercury lived in Liverpool for a time in the late sixtees in the Penny Lane area.
• The building club still stands, the blue doorway directly below the Arthur Dooley statue was the entrance. It's now the basement of The Audio Rooms.
• Apparantly, the club had red painted ceiling and it would get so hot in there (sound familiar?!) that the paint would drip off on to whoever was stood there, teenagers and alike would go around for days with these marks on them, a sort of badge of honour to say "I've been to Eric's!"
• Erics was at the forefront of new music in the UK around 1978-83. Locally, the club gave rise to the likes of: Julian Cope (Tear Drop Explodes); Pete Burns (Dead or Alive); Early band(s) for Ian Broudie (Lightening Seeds); Deaf School (managed by Ken Testi) but I understand that other bands like UB40 and The Police also had early gigs there on the road to fame and fortune.
• When folk got bored with 'jangly guitar music' the Liverpool music scene did not die, we just moved it across the street - we are very resourceful round here y'know!
• Broadcaster and at the forefront of Juice FM in Liverpool, Janice Long (Keith Chegwin's sister) was a huge fan of the venue.
