Robert Smith features in one of my favourite Beatle covers with Siouxsie and the Banshees version of 'Dear Prudence', perhaps he's a Beatle fan...

I'm a huge Cure and Siouxie fan. I have all the Cure albums and a big chunk of their singles etc. And a fair amount of The Banshees' albums.
Umm,,,interesting story about the two times Robert Smith was a Banshee.
Of course this is a thread about Beatles' covers. Hello Goodbye is a pretty straight rendition. I noticed that O'Donnel and Gabrels weren't in the Cure vid.
I'm not so certain I will get this comp/tribute. I do often find that tribute album covers are usually underwhelming. I may illegally download it. But I find that you have to wade through a lot of dross before you get to the gold on these sorts of tributes.
Anyone agree?

Agreed, back in 98 I bought the 'George Martin - In My Life' CD, which was basically a load of celebs doing renditions of Beatle songs, some good...but mostly bad. Robin Williams, Billy Connolly, Goldie Hawn and phil Collins all featured but It was most notable, in my opinion, for Sean Connery's spoken version of the title track 'In my life',....."There are playshes I'll remember, All my life, though shum have changed"...Gold dust!!!

I respect people choices in music, but to me, it's just karaoke. Anybody can take someone else's music and make it there's. Thats the easy part. Joe Cocker did a decent job of "With A Little Help With My Friends", Elton did just ok with "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds". If there is one song I will give full credit too, would be Manfred Manns version of "Blinded By The Light", that is sooooooooo much better than Bruce Bedsprings original version

I love The Cure but i don't like this cover version of Hello, goodbye. Unnecessary

A lot of times, cover versions are unnecessary. Unless (in my opinion) they actually do something to the song. This is a pretty straight copy of the original. I think bands are invited to do these sorts of things and it's generally guaranteed a bit of extra money in their pockets. Am I right or just cynical?

you're right but, for example, i thought (in my opinion) that some (not all) of cover versions i heard in the Beatles 50th anniversary grammy show are more powerful than the Cure version of this song. For me.
