It's not often that I feel so enthusiastically inspired and incredibly lifted by a music artist. So much so that I really need to share this with Forum members or anyone who'll listen to be quite frank. The media has compared Bill Fay to such luminaries as Al Stewart, Leonard Cohen, Nick Drake, Donovan, Lee Hazlewood and Bob Dylan but that's only half the story. They have also described his music as 'eclectic', 'brooding', 'cathartic' 'intense', 'poignant' 'melancholy' and 'enigmatic'. This honestly does not do justice to this special man. I would urge you to read about him here as it will give you a background to the 'lost and found' aspect to him and his music and will also serve to describe the man himself much more than I can ever deliver. I do think Mr Kite will appreciate him and I hope that other Forum members (that's you!) will at least take some time to look into some of his music. This is Bill Fay from a set he did on Jools Holland 'Later'. Enjoy.

Thanks Art. I've been listening. Those Bill Fay titles are sure some lush and nice sounding records. I had never heard of him before. It's very easy to listen too in a David Gray sort of way. I don't mean that he's like David Gray but it's so easy to slide right into whilst easing back in your musical chair.
I gather that his lyrics are supposed to be paid attention to. That will take me a couple more listens to get the sense of them.
I feel the same way about Rheostatics that you do about Mr Fay. I wondered if you got the album I dropped a couple of weeks ago. Just chalk full of musical and lyrical depth but not in a complicated proggy kind of way. Sort of, Hank Williams meets Pink Floyd meets The Ramones.

Thanks Mr A
Yes, Bill Fay's lyrics are all part and parcel of his whole persona and musical output. They're kind of quirky but repeat listens may have you believe that you've actually done that or you've been there. Hope I'm making sense here. Give him a few plays and you will be rewarded.
I must admit that, although having downloaded the Rheostatics stuff, I have so much to listen to these days that I had overlooked them but I know I'll get round to taking a closer look and listen to them. However, because you mentioned them in this particular thread, I decided to take a track at random and listen to it. That track was 'California Dreamline' and, well, gosh! First impressions are that they sound like a cross between Arcade Fire and, at times, David Bowie. Then I heard them mention 'Californication' in the song. So, 'Whale Music' was released in 1992 and The Red Hot Chilli Peppers 'Californication' was released in 1999. Is there a story there? The song is absolutely amazing. I will definitely try to listen to more them over the next week. Thanks for the introduction Mr A.

You're welcome Art. I'm always trying to get a plug in for certain overlooked Canadian bands. These guys in particular.

Hey Art. Thought you'd like to know, I'm absorbing the Fay albums one at a time and currently I'm working on his self titled album. Those strings are so nicely scored and the horn charts are just brilliant. And his lyrics aren't the usual pap you get. Just left of centre, I would say.

The strings are just right - not overly produced. So, if you want to ride a bike, ride your bike - if you like!
