I agree with all of Mr Kite's scores except for:
Red Album - 7. Just way too heavy on Rubber Soul songs. And only ONE song from With The Beatles? And not counting the first two singles, nothing from Please Please Me.
1 - 0 It's reason for being is, I suppose, to introduce the generation that received it, to The Beatles. But I ignored it for one very fundamental reason. Love Me Do is on it. It was The Beatles' first number 17. And Please Please Me is NOT on it. And it WAS a number one.
And later:
Let It Be (naked) - ? To me, it just seemed to be like a man who has lost an argument a long time ago and yet still comes back with a ''and another thing....'' when it is far too late to have any effect. And Spector's production was just fine.
So There! Everything you never wanted to know but were forced to find out.

What are we basing our scores on? A 10 for me would be the Beatles White Album based on other Beatle lps or are we basing the score on everything we have ever heard? example Led Zep lps or Pink Floyd lps.

In MY heart and mind, the Beatles,Led Zep,Who,Stones,Floyd and maybe the Moody Blues of the pscyhedelic years are all leagues of their own. There's just no legitimate basis for comparison between these and most other big pop/rock acts,ESPECIALLY Floyd. They're left to the left of the left of the dark side of the moon.So maybe we ought to just judge based on the individual musical aspects each of these artists aspired to instead of just rating them against the field. In THAT department, they blow EVERYONE away!Personally,I can't see rating any Beatles album below an eight.Maybe with the exception of the "Yellow Submarine" soundtrack, which is not truly a Fab work as it's quality is somewhat lessened by the rather extraneous Geoerge Martin instrumentals.I always belonged to the school of thought that they should have issued the four latest tracks("All Together Now","Hey Bulldog","It's All Too Much" and "It's Only A Northern Song")as an EP.Though this mode of release was generally out of fashion in America by early 1969,the Beatles certainly had the industry clout to be the exception.

Great post. Yes it is subjective and I agree with your opinion on Yellow Submarine as an E.P. In my ratings no album apart from Y.S and LATHB (man the srcreaming is just too much!) get lower than a 7/10 , which is good.

I'd give every LP from 'Please Please Me' to 'Let It Be' 10/10.
The only compilation I'd give 10/10 is 'Oldies' because, though not definitive, it's from '66, got a great cover and one of the greatest pictures of the group on the back.....oh, and 'Bad Boy'. (Hey! I'd even give the 'Charity' LP from '69 10/10, because it's got the definitive 'Across The Universe' and the brilliant 'Wings' by The Hollies.)
Even 'Yellow Submarine' with the 4 new songs on it, still qualifies simply because it's got more songs I'd want to hear on it (i.e. '4') than any LP released after 'Pink Moon'!
After that the only LP that can be fitted in the 60s LPs without looking out of place is 'Live At The BBC', and I would love to see a Volume 2.

I agree.......and not forgetting Oldies but Goldies - 10 Beatles Ballads - 10 Love Songs - 10 Rarities - 10 Reel Music - 10 Rock 'n' Roll vol. 1 - 11 Rock 'n' Roll vol. 2 - 10 20 Greatest Hits - 10 I agree with Amadeus on Let It Be Naked though. It wreaks of pettiness on McCartneys part and no tracks are actually any better and in many cases worse than Let It Be.

I'll have to give every album a 10, of course these are the American versions I'm rating. I can remember waiting patiently for days for every one of them to be released! And I was never let down!! Probably the reason I'm on this Forum typing this right now 40 odd years after they no longer existed.

You're living in the past, mannnn!
BTW, what are your favorite U.S. records? I get confused whenever I listen to Beatles For Sale because it's ingrained in me to expect Beatles 65 and it goes all cockeyed after Mr. Moonlight.

After that the only LP that can be fitted in the 60s LPs without looking out of place is 'Live At The BBC', and I would love to see a Volume 2. That is totally ridiculous. It's like saying you are not a true beatles fan unless you give all their albums 10/10 and not listen to any other music. I would like to think that most Beatles fans have a great love for other types of music as well. Saying that Yellow Submarine has got more songs on it you'd want to hear than any other album after 'Pink Moon'? Now don't get me wrong Hey Bulldog is a brilliant track, but the rest? Only a Northern Song is nearly listenable and one of Georges poorer efforts. All Togehter Now is a complete throwaway and is very repetitive. I do like Its all too much but it does meander. But the say that these tracks are better than classic albums that have been released since such as REMs 'Automatic For The People' or Radioheads 'Ok Computer'. If you think that Yellow Sub is better than these albums you really are missing out on some great music :/ I do agree with you though on loving to see a volume 2 Live at the Beep!

What's this 'not listen to any other music' nonsense. Want an extended chat on Rock 'n' Roll? Pre-War Blues? Experimental music of the 50s/60s? I'm ready, or have you (like some one else I could mention!) just built your opinions around what the music press tell you? i.e. Mojo gives it 5/5, therefore it must be good.
Given the two items you reference (R.E.M. and Radiohead) I clearly am not missing out on anything!!!! What have you done? Swallowed a 'Best 500 CDs of all time' feature!!!! I once had the great misfortune to listen to most of 'Automatic' (not by choice) and it seemed to never end. Indeed I didn't get to the end of it, I went down the pub!
The gold is in the Golden Age (1956-69) and while I wouldn't give all the post-60s releases 0/10 obviously (bits of Anthology - not the artwork - are wonderful), I just don't rate any of them as highly as the core catalogue. That said 'Love' and 'Let It Be.....Naked' I would give 0/10.

For A Number Of Things

3 things: 1. I'd have the give the earlier albums lower ratings than the later ones. Geezer as I am, I was part of the intended demographic when their records were released, and that each one was better than the one that preceded it. 2. Being American, I'd have the rate the Dexterized Capitol vinyl versions, up to and including Revolver, rather than the originals. Meet the Beatles (With... more or less), Beatles '65 (...For Sale, more or less), etc. would get a higher rating than The Beatles 2nd Album, VI, and Yesterday and Today. Although Y & T was actually pretty good. Again, they kept getting better. 3. I'd rate them against each other rather than against other recording artists. That would not be fair.

I went a step further and ranked them using four different qualities. With a maximum of 50 points per column and a minimum of 10 points, here are the four columns: Music: Basically how good the music on the album is in general. Variety: Does the album have lots of different kinds of songs, or are most of them all the same in general. Presentation: How well they are placed on the album and whether or not there are unique qualities of the track listing (i.e. The Abbey Road Medley was presented well). External: Mostly the album cover and maybe if the album came with inserts. NOTE: I did not include the Yellow Submarine album due to it being too difficult to rank for several reasons. Mainly because only four songs were new material and because The Beatles themselves would rather it have been an EP.
